I bought a (very slightly used) D600, with Win XP Pro, Microsoft Office 2003, Adobe Photoshop (among a bunch of other programs), 1.6 GHZ Pentium M, 512 Megs of Ram, 30GB hard drive, Wireles net, CD burner, and DVD rom (the last three I know are standard..) for 1,060 dollars. Now I was just wondering... yes I'm a little worried about the heat issue (isn't everyone?)... but is it really all that bad if you make sure the fan isn't covered, clean it regularly, and treat it properly? Other than that and a cooling pad are there other ways to combat the heat?
I've never had a Lap before so I'm used to the nice cool Desk keyboards.... but heck I live in a desert (which was about 105F today.) so heat doesn't bother me too much.
Anyways do you think I will at least get my moneys worth?
Thanks,
Z

Yes, I think you will be allright. Notebooks in general have to cram a lot of stuff into a tiny space, so there will always be some heat generated, however some laptops and brands stay cooler than others. In your case, what you mention is about all you can do to keep your laptop running in good shape. And I'm sure you know this, but I wouldn't run a laptop on a carpet, blankets, etc so as not to build up heat.

My company's D600 costs $2400, and it is after a corporate discount of 27% (not sure but was told that). 1G RAM, 80G HDD, 1.6 GHZ Pentium M, etc.
Most heat is in the RAM area. So far I don't have any problem with the heat. On the keyboard towards left side I feel a little heat and that's all.
The fan is super quiet. My own laptop is Ispiron 8600, also super quiet. Before 8600 I bought Fujitsu C261 and the fan noise made me so crazy that I returned it the next day.
Just bought a D600 Latitude
