    Hello,

FINALLY after months of research, I went with the E1520. I was going to go with the vostro, unfortunately, it doesn't offer the 7200 RPM Hard drive.
Question: I really want Vista ultimate, however, E1520 does not offer it by default, so the sales rep selected vista home basic and gave me Vista upgrade ultimate for 269.99; did I get ripped off? because amazon is offering Microsoft Windows Vista Anytime Upgrade Pack [Home Basic to Ultimate] for 199.95!
    http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Windows-Anytime-Upgrade-Ultimate/dp/B000NCTJWU
What OS would be installed once I get the unit?

If you were wondering about my specs: here they are!

Yeah, you probably did get ripped off. Should have gone with Amazon.

I was wondering why your computer cost so much, and then I realized you got the 4GB of RAM. That drives the price up like mad.

    Two things.

    Why'd you get Home Basic?

Second of all, you said you researched like crazy. Why, then, did you not get 1 GB of RAM, and changed it to 4 GB yourself?

4 GB of RAM costa just $240 on Newegg, not $800 like with Dell.

I think that's $2300 Canadian, which is more like $2100 US. Still a lot. But if he really needs the 4 GB RAM, let's not forget that some people don't feel comfortable switching out RAM in a notebook. Unless you have a friend who can do it for you, you're kind of stuck. Also tax in Canada is higher than in the US. And I don't know about how well Dell coupons work in Canada. This may have been about as good as he could do without a Dell rep offering him discounts. Of course the Vista Ultimate upgrade looks high..

Anyone know what that $8.00 Environmental Disposal fee is? Is that a Canadian thing?

    $2300 = Get a 15.4inch Macbook Pro.

You should have gotten 1gb ram, lowest HD option, applied a coupon or two, and after all is said and done, your system probably would have cost $1000 less even after you bought your own ram, 200gb 7200 rpm drive (which is a Hitachi, faster and bigger than the Seagate your getting), and your own Vista ultimate.

No offense man......but holy ****.....you say you do research, have $2300 to kill....and buy an Inspiron? are on you crack or something....

You could have at least bought just 1GB and bought 4GB off newegg after you got the laptop....

With that much money, I would have invested a couple more hundred dollars and gotten a M1710.

Folks, I need help...I don't want to start another thread on this but I am concerned. Here is the thing, I always rig up various Dell configurations (strange fun I confess..but it is an addiction I have) to see how the prices work out for me...anyway, I always hit about $2000-2100 for the 1520 also. I usually tack on the one and only coupon that I find here at notebookreview.com. But I also always go for the Premium Care option and always go for the highest video card and always go for 7200RPM drive and always go for draft-n and always go for 1440x900 (if i remember) resolution and always go the 2.0Ghz, 2GB, 160GB computer specs and always go for ummm...gosh okay forgot now...and sorry for the bad run on sentence!! :)

Anyway, I sometimes don't know what I am doing wrong in my configuration...maybe I am not so good at finding awesome coupons..this (notebookreview.com) is the only place I go daily...I always start by hitting only dell.com and simply follow the site...but I always end up again around $2000-$2100...yet here on these forums when people post their final price many times I see them coming in around $1299.00 to $1599 for the 1520...

So given all that I always select...am I on track with my pricing with what I configure up?

Thank you in advance..and OP gotta tell you, not sure if getting 4GB was going to give you much bang for you buck...but not sure what you will be using your laptop for. And the Windows Vista Ultimate...well...not my cup of tea...but enjoy the features. It will get cooler as Microsoft begins releasing more cool things for Ultimate users only. Right now you just got a few things I believe (Texas Hold'em??)

Yes, you got ripped off for the Vista Ultimate...but that wasn't the only thing you got ripped off with ;)

Oh, and drop the "E" it's only Inspiron 1520...

To address some of your concerns....I also took some time out when I was ordering my 1520 to do different configurations. The final price with EPP and $200 student coupon, the price came out to $1538. I was extremely satisfied with that because the real price was $2180. Dell always changes things on their site so....I got a different price everytime and I finally just bought it.

Keep in mind, this was before Dell started offering Free upgrades to 2GB and 160GB hard drive. Personally, if you like how the Vostro 1500 looks, just get that with all the same features as the 1520 you are configuring and you will get it for cheaper.

First of all, thank you all for your input.
The only reason why I'm getting the 4GB of RAM is Because the upgrade from a 2GB was only $310. I thought of getting just the 1GB, however, it doesn't get come in 1 DIMM, it comes as 2 x 512. However I still have to buy 2 X 2GB which is around $340 including shipping and everything, so I though I'd just spent an extra 100 and get Dell to install it for me, just to be on the safe side. WHAT do you think????????
Another reason why the price might seem high is the fact that I paid for 4 years complete system care which covers In-Home service, parts & labor, 24x7 phone support, Theft recovery assistance & accidental damage protection, plus all the other useless features.

I'm going to Cancel the Windows Ultimate Upgrade. The only reason why I like to buy it is because I want to get updates. otherwise, I'm all for downloading!

What do you think? is the price still high? The only reason why I can spend that much money is the fact the I got a scholarship from a Canadian university and my father is providing $500 towards a laptop purchase.

I can always cancel the order if need be. The features I'm looking for is the new Santa Rosa Intel Platform, 7200 RPM, DX10 graphics card...

Thank you all again for your inputs, waiting for more!

What illmatic is basically saying is that if you wanted to pay these low prices on the this system you needed to look into buying it ending of June to the ending of july after that deals pretty much went under and coupons etc.. are just basic, If you really want 1 and you don't mind waiting i am sure something else will popup soon, but who knows you delay it now and the price may go higher, so you can goahead and get the vostro 1500 or you can wait for something else to come up as deals are always coming up you just gotta look and find :)

Seriously, iamcanadian. I will give you an alternative....if you have that much cash.....as someone else said buy a really nice laptop like a MBP.

Don't pay that much for a frickin Inspiron man. If you want to go Dell, then buy the M1710, which is a superb notebook.

Also, I got the Premium care as well....but my price was still much lower...

Another note....you can get updates if you download the right copy.... :)X)

The starting price on the M1710 is how much I paid for the TOP Inspiron notebook. Plus its 17", and does not have the Santa rosa and a DX10 Video card.

OK for the same specs that I have, how much would a laptop cost?

    illmatic, jovan, candian

thank you. truly one of the best places to hang out on the internet (notebookreview) sometimes I wonder maybe I don't want to get a new Dell because then their will be no more reason for me to hang out here with you all. anyway, thanks.

Oh, one last thing illMatic, I could be wrong on this, but I thought I read somewhere (well it must be here in this forum because I do not go anywhere else) that a new XPS 1730 was coming out towards end of August? Just a rumor? Only reason, I mention is because although you are proper in suggesting the 1710, I just thought maybe the OP ought to know that their may be a new 1730 coming out as well to help make his final decision. Again, apologies....I don't want to just shoot off the hip, but honestly I thought I read this to be true...

I understand you got a 4 year warranty with CompleteCare, but people like me get CompleteCare for no additional charge <_<

The 4GB of RAM for $310 additional is a ripoff, I just bought 2 x 2GB straight from NewEgg for under $200 ;)

Yeah. Of course the 1730 is coming out. I already knew this, but the OP ordered it NOW. We don't know when the 1730 is coming out.

Exactly my point, before. It's much better to just get 1GB from Dell...even if it's 2x512MB....and buy from newegg....4GB(2x2GB) and a lot cheaper.

Sorry, I meant the XPS M1730 which is currently in the works. My cousin, who is an XPS Rep said it would be out "soon". I'll try to get more info out of him. :)

That laptop is going to feature the 8700M GT, maybe SLi. I don't know about the processor.

I did answer your question, buddy...

    ;)

I get amazing deals, and know exactly what to do. I ordered a long time ago anyway, so if you are wanting to know what I did to order now you should have the sense to know that Dell changes their pricing hourly. I didn't just be like "can I have CompleteCare for free" I just got certain configurations to be it was the same price if I just add on CompleteCare so I figured why not.

No one can get that machine for $900, so I did answer your question...

good news, I called the sales rep to cancel my order complaining that the price is WAY too high. He told me if I take a 350 dollars off, would you (me) still be interested? After hearing that, I was sooo exited. However, I still told him that the price is too high. He then offered me 75 dollars gift card from Dell store. I told him sure.
SO my final price including taxes and everything is: $1966.22 + $75 gift card from Dell store...

NOW is the price right? or is it still expensive?

Just to sum up my computer specs:
    Inspiron 1520, Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 2.2GHz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache
    4GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
    160G 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
built in 2.0 M cam and bluetooth
    Intel Wireless-n-draft card
4 years complete system care which covers In-Home service, parts & labor, 24x7 phone support, Theft recovery assistance & accidental damage protection, plus all the other useless features.

    Thank you

Considering all the options that you want, that you don't want to do any upgrading yourself, and that Dell isn't having any special sales right now, it's not bad.
What are you going to get from the Dell store?

I just went to Dell.com and configured a PC to match what you wrote in your email. Purchasing it here in the States with a 6% sales tax and using a $325.00 off coupon I got from Notebookreview.com, my end total comes to $2368.77 final. You came in at $1966.22 (Let's forget the $75.00 thing for now). That is a difference of about $400.00.

So you mean to tell me you got $400.00 dollars off because you complained the prices are too high???

Something doesn't seem right...you better make sure you didn't get refurb unit.

Sometimes I get the feeling Dell is starting to sell computer/laptops like Used Car Salemen and that just turns me off.

dells prices change all the time! he will get a new one. god go to their site every few days and you will have the same config and different prices for each upgrade. when they have big coupons ie 350 off they usually raise the prices some. when there are no coupons they are lower. its just the way it is. dont scare the guy and think that his 2k laptop is going to be referb when it is clearly not!

First of all I write these messages on the off chance that someone from Dell reads this. I personally don't care enough to scare that guy...what I care about is myself and the fact that I am paying $400.00 more just because I bought a Dell the way I am supposed to (without complaining).

Why should that guy get $400.00 off the price just because he thought the prices are too high? I'm pretty sure someone from Dell is not going too happy with that salesman giving way $400.00 of Dell's profit!!

Maybe that is what I am learning from this thread...never buy a Dell over the website (which is how I bought all my 3 other Dells)...always end the call by telling the saleperson the prices are way too high...look to see if they lower it by $400.00...and if not...say goodbye...and try the next day and hope for someone else???

Look, I don't want to sound like a complainer and just in case I get a poster tells me "Dude, if you really don't like Dell don't buy it from them" let me just say that is not going to happen. I really love Dell and I really will buy from them again...its just since coming onto this forum I seem to be hit with this new realization that the website prices are totally up for negotiation and its any price for any buyer...

Something about that just turns me off...I mean that is fine for other venues...but for my beloved Dell.

Original Poster...I apologize...I didn't mean to scare you...like Nizzy said you'll get new, of course, I guess I was just venting or realizing or understanding...whatever it is...I apologize.

ps. I go to the Dell website every morning and every moring I configure a laptop and honestly the prices almost always mostly the same. Usually change by less than $80.00 (not $400.00)...only after 8 months would I notice a reduction and even then..its not really a reduction..its just they include more in the base price.
