I just got a dell 640m in the mail, so far I love it, no problems... except for one. The screen makes my eyes bleed after I use it for more than 20 minutes. Its crisp and looks great..... but it makes my eyes really hurt. My old toshiba's screen was amazing, I could stare at it for hours without feeling a thing.

I thought its because it has a higher rez 1440x900 vs 1280x768, but decreasing it doesn't make much difference.

    Anyone have a similar problem?

it's the truelife glossy over matte effect (sparkles, graininess, dirty whites), they tend to tire the eyes after a while...

Yeah, if you got a glossy over a matte, and you had no experience with a glossy screen before, it'll may take some time to adjust, depending on the person. If you really hate the screen, I'd call Dell for an exchange for a matte.

Well, my old toshiba and this dell have a mirror shine lcds. Toshiba was fine, but this thing is not.

In the dell site I cant find it anywhere that they offer 2 types of finishes. Is it something you have to request over the phone?
Well they charge me money for the exchange, and should I even bother?

If your eyes are being irritated by the glossy screen finish, I would try and get a matte and see if that helps. Also, what was the model of your Toshiba? Reguarding your exchange: If you're still within the 21 days of invoice, you should be able to return the notebook, and then re-order. Make sure that you tell the service rep. that your eyes were irritated by the screen, and would like to return and re-order, or they'll charge you for the shipping back.

i've got a dell 19" desktop monitor matte finish and it still has those sparkle effect, it made my eye tired just by looking at it, on top of that the colour is very unnatural and the viewing angle is sooo low that i continually has to adjust my head as there is no "right" viewing angle, hmmmm... i was comsidering xps m1710 w/ glossy screen, but it seems all dell screen has this issue made me doubt...

Yah Im also not too happy with the viewing angles. Changing vertical viewing angle causes colors to change, and the blacks arent displayed properly due to the backlight... it just looks greyish.

I am not saying you have to "settle for it" but give your eyes a few days. I have the sparkle issue and DELL is sending me a replacement LCD, but like you I had trouble seeing everything at first (and I'm only 18 LOL) I came from a 17" LCD @ 1280 x 1024 where everything (now that i look back at it) is HUGE! But I would give it a week before I made returning decisions.

Yah Im in the same boat. Switching it to 1280x768 solves the issue (kind of) but it looks so ugly, I cant use it.

I have 20/20 vision and no glasses. Gonn use it for a few more days.

I have a suggestion if the screen and fonts are hard to read. Right Click on Desktop, go to properties, appearance and set the font size to "large." This increased the icon size and little and made reading windows a lot! more manageable while not distorting websites and pictures like messing around with DPI does.... Give it a shot!

Well I gave it a shot. My eyes are falling out of their sockets after a few hours of use. Watching fullscreen videos is totally fine.... but as soon as you see Windows..... the pain kicks in. No pun intended.

Are you positive your screen has not defects such as sparkle, Excessive light leakage? This doesn't sound right for some reason.

    What is "sparkle"?

And how long will it take dell to replace it? As I understand, they ship you a box, you put it into the box... and ship it back or do they provide you with a replacement up front, like they did with my PDA?

no ptang, i dont have e1504 yet.
    BUT
Im really on tight budget, so im going to buy it and im trying to find which screen is better for my needs. glossy with 1440 resolution and many issues , or matte with 1280 resolution and i dont know if they have the same issues.

Go with the glossy.....the "glare" everyone talks about with the TrueLife screens is greatly blown out of proportion.
