Well, got back from class and there it was! I am currently doing a reinstall while I go eat at Chipotle. After that I am going to try some 3Dmark05 stuff ;)

Some first quick impressions. I checked my part #'s to compare my old E1705 to this one... here are the differences:

LCD: Samsung to LG- I actually think this LCD looks better! There is less like leakage than the Samsung and the colors seem a little more vivid, though that may be subjective. Also, the lid of this one closes better than the old.. the old one used to need some force to close it, this one cleanly locks into place.

Edit: as I was, there is light leakage at the top and bottom, but it is less than the old one in total. No matter, I am not put off by it.

DVD Drive: NEC to Sony- :( This new Sony is LOUD. The NEC was so quiet and subtle, this new one rocks the house! Literally.

Keyboard: I don't know the part number, but this new one is much better than the old one; more firm, the button pushes are more crisp and they don't seem to be as fragile. I like it!

Power button: the old one didn't work right, and it seemed stuck on the right side. THis one is smooth as butter!!

I am VERY happy with this new E1705. I didn't think it could get better, but it has!!! Now, I just can't wait to test out the new 7900 GS!

Way to go! Now, we can all benefit (7800 users) from your re-order if you would do some heat testing of the 7900gs. This'll allow us to decide whether or not to swap for 7900gs vs. 7800 in e1705. Looking forward to it. :)

Man. I'm so jealous...I can't wait to get mine!
    What is your config??
Mine still hasn't shipped or anything...I ordered it 5/18 and it has said the same exact thing on the order status site everyday...the waiting is killing me!

I got the 2.0 GHz Yonah, 1 GB 533 RAM, 60 GB 5200 RPM HDD, 7900 GS, Bluetooth, 6 Cell Battery, Audigy, WUXGA w/ Truelife.

I ordered mine on the 18th as well, but had Next Day shipping through. Hang in there, you will get it before you know it, Dell's under promise over deliver policy makes you feel good ;)

Another edit: this Sony DVD drive BLOWS. It is so fricken loud and obnoxious.

Man... I'm ancy and can't wait to see that 3d Mark info and the heat it generates once you set it to normal clock settings (It's underclocked when you get it from Dell, from what I read).

Soemthing is up.. this thing is not allowing me to reinstall Windows... gives me an error after I boot to the CD saying "File setupdd.sys could not be loaded. The error code is 7. Press any key to continue."

This just means no tests until this gets figured out :(

Edit: according to Microsoft, it says the disk drive is malfunctioning. Go figure, gotta rain on my parade :( Sony sucks.

OK, after some quick research I found that to fix the problem i was having, I had to "switch around the sticks of RAM"... voila, it worked somehow and a fresh copy of Win XP is installing now :)

WTF, why would RAM have anything to do with the XP disc not installing right?

I am really interested to know about the temperatures of the GPU. If they are lower with the 7900, then I am definitely returning my e1705 with 7800. Let me know what you find out when you get around to it.

And congrats on your purchase! :)

Thanks all, will get to the tests as soon as I get these drivers reinstalled.

Quick question, what drivers (tweaksrus) should I get for this 7900 GS? I am on the page looking for them but am not sure which ones to get.

I am using the 84.56 v.2.40 ones. They are running fine for me, and I really like them. Try those! :)

Where on Tweaksrus do I find this driver? Edit- found it, just wanted to make sure :)

I tried to find the stock drivers from Dell, but they only have the 7800 drivers... will that one work in the 7900 GS? I want to get some stock 3DMark05 scores before I upgrade.

Okay that sounds good. I think the stock 7800 drivers should work on the 7900 but I can't be certain.

Anyways, how is the temperature of the GPU and system? Is the temp lower than the 7800 card?

Mine will be here tomorrow, can't wait!!! :D

One thing that I would like to ask is that I plan on re-installing the OS and have read on the forums about getting disc's from Dell to do this. Mainly MD. I, as most of you don't won't all the Crapware that comes with it. What does this process look like for the E1705? Is it just like the E1505? Is there a need for a third party partition software such as "Partition Magic"? And how does re-installing drivers and software look? This is my first lappy but built numerous desktops. I imagine it would be pretty much the same damn thing. Am I correct?

I just installed the latest mobileForce drivers from TweaksRus :)

I don't recall at what temperature the 7800 Go ran at, but right now, just hanging out here with just wireless and bluetooth running, the card is at 74 C. I hope this is good  It says the slowdown threshold is at 102 C. The stock setting are at 375 MHz Core and 507 MHz memory.

I am am going to overclock by hitting the "Detect Optimal Frequencies" button, and will let the computer run for a bit.

Edit- Ok, I just went up to 430 and 590. Wow! After a restart, the temperature dropped to 65 C!!!!! Wait, 64 C.. will it drop anymore??! yep, 63 C...

The 7800 ran at about that temp. Thanks for the update on the GPU temp. This changes things a little bit for me. I think I might just stick with the e1705 with 7800 card. My only reason for the upgrade was the lower temp, which seems to be a bust at this point.

And with the release of the updated I8kfanGUI, my temps are now a very cool 58 degrees. :)

Good luck with the new notebook, and keep us updated!! ;)

Do a search on the forums and you will see some good info. I believe there is a guide by southern girl that is quite helpful. Just search and all your questions and more should be answered. Also check out www.notebookforums.com for more info. ;)

me too me too me too!!!!

I got my replacement delivered today and all in all feel satisfied for having gone through the process. My changes ordered were T2300 upgraded to T2400 and 7800 >> 7900...

Also have the Sony dvd drive versus NEC in the old one, but the lcd on the new one is LG versus Samsung on the old one. Side by side on the same settings the new one looks much better. Am not going to bother with checking actual temps, but the bottom of the new one feels slightly cooler to the touch, and is not at all uncomfortable perched on my bare legs. I know this is totally subjective but that's all you get from me...

Switched out the 2 GB of pc5300 I had purchased from newegg to the new one, did a system restore to take it back to ground zero, and the old one is back in the box ready to be shipped tomorrow.

Could you post some actual temps of the 7900 GPU in the e1705? I wanna see how hot it runs.

Right now I am running about 62 degrees OC'ed to optimal settings with fans on slow at all times. Not too shabby, but I wanna know if the 7900 is worth the upgrade. :)

what program do you use to measure temps?

i don't think i'd have paid full price for the update, but getting the T2400 CPU and 7900 GPU for a total of $12 more plus return shipping on the first E1705 made it seem a no-brainer. And I switched out the dvd drives to keep the NEC and send back the Sony...

This is a great thead for tuning up your notebook.

I think an OS reinstall is unneccesary if you just prune all the crap off, and I am hugely anal about wasting cycles.

Ok, Just got my E1705 opened it, fired it up and has some sort of display issue. Everything will be normal but then for no reason and randomly off and on the screen turns to, what looks like someone thru a rock at it. It turns all distorted. I'm going to try and find a different video driver for it and see if this might help but if not it's back to Dell. I see where people are getting drivers from Tweaks R US. Can someone provide a specific link to the correct driver please. They have to many to choose from and are a little confusing. Thank You!

    Hey thank you nickster87 :)

Can you imagine getting your new lappy and then having this happen right out of the box? Pretty much sux. I'm hoping that it's just a driver issue and not a hardware issues. I will try this.

    Thanks again.

Yes, I agree that you really got the shaft from Dell. The excitement has built and what an anticlimactice experience you've had!

Hopefully it is just a driver issue, and if not Dell should quickly get you a replacement. I am sorry that you've had to go through this, but I hope you get things up and running soon! :)

Not sure how the numbers worked out except there must have been a price drop on the T2400...and when they reintroduced the 7900 in the mix it was at roughly the same price as the 7800 had been the week before. The ONLY other difference was a 1 year versus 2 year warranty, but I didn't go back and check the prices on that. I applied two coupons $750 off $1999 and $35 off $300...I didn't use a $100 coupon either time...the configuration came in at just over $2000 both times.

See im not sure if its worth the 150 to upgrade from the 7800. The 7900's performance is only slightly beter, but temps are pretty much the same :(

I'm still going to wait until more people get some solid stats about the temps etc. Someone got a 6300+ score on 05 I think, that is making me want the 7900.
