Maybe your fingerprints are worn down :p

Mine is in pre production so I can't help you yet. It should be a very useful tool...

You have to push your finger down into the groove.

The indent of the reader is my only real complaint about the m1330. I wish Dell had made it flush instead of recessed.

Khris is right. Gotta kind of lightly press your finger into the groove. Making sure that the pad of your finger is making constant contact with the actual part that is doing the scanning. It took me a few tries but once you get a feel for it, it really works well. Not sure how secure it really is though.

nothing to add about how to swipe your finger. security wise, i set my fingerprint up and then my brother tried his, it didn't work. DNA wise, he's probably a close match....don't know what that means for our fingerprints though

Can you use the fingerprint reader for signing into, say, your email on the internet?

you can use the fingerprint reader for most things that require a username and password. I have mine set for email and many other things including this website.

So you could set it up for signing into multiple things, including things that have different usernames and passwords?

Yes, you will be able to log into may different things with different user names and passwords. Multiple logins for the same website can be tricky though, you can duplicate the association to the site. For example, It will by default name it the same thing but it will be followed with "(2)" and so on. These require a little manual intervention sometimes. What I'm referring to is if say you have 2 different yahoo accounts. You log in from the same site so the reader will automatically want to play the first login you set up rather than decide on its own which of two you want.

If you hold the SHIFT key while swiping for a site that has an existing login, it will bring up the scanner control panel where you can register a new login.

If your finger is too dry it may not register - try breathing on it first - or perhaps licking it if that doesn't result in unwanted exchange of body fluids with other users.

I also found it took a bit of practice, and doesn't work when the disk is being hammered.
