What programs can I get rid of to make it run quicker? What other things should I change? Any tips or things I should look out for?

Well, to run quicker, I would suggest getting rid of things not needed in the system tray. In general, the fewer the icons down there, the fewer apps running in the background.

Your notebook will run faster when plugged in, something some people don't realize when using computers running mobile processors (designed to use less power and reduce clock speed to save energy when in battery mode)
