I'm trying to lower prices on a configuration and wondering to myself if I really need the LED screen. Never had one and don't know how nice it is. So, do I need it?

Also, how important is the 1440x900 over the 1280?

The LED screen offers better contrast, lower weight and power consumption.
It also avoids the use of mercury which is a *serious* environmental hazard.

Right now you can get a HP dv4z with the new Puma ZM-80 processor, 2GB, 250gb, 14 in LED screen and HD3200 graphics with Blu-Ray drive for just 1250 - 30% off = $875
which is a great value with coupon code = NB8821.

LED screen is nice, but its not a dealbuster if i cant get it

1440x900 is better than 1280, especially on a 15" lappy

    Hey you!

    1440x900 over the 1280 = simply FTW ;) :) It is a much better screen! ;) :)

And, I can't say to go for the LED, as I don't have it on my LG...but, if I had the chance now...I would most certainly have it..I have seen it, and it's pretty nice ;) :)

However, my screen is pretty much *perfect* for me ;) :)

    Good luck in your choices!!!

    Cin ;) :)

if u are gonna be usin yur laptop in an outdoor environment. an LED screen would be more ideal cuz they are generally much brighter.

I can't say I have used one, but for what they charge I certainly am not fretting that I didn't get one. If a Vostro 1400 one shows up on ebay, I might be tempted to buy it.

I'll never get a CCFL screen again (at least if I can resist the temptation of that cheap Gateway laptop :D ). I'm sold on the technology after getting to use a Macbook Pro for a while last year.

It's brighter, IMO looks better, lights up instantly, dosen't fade (or at least nowhere near as fast as CCFL or other technologies), as mentioned dosen't have Mercury which is awesome, and also dosen't spew out UV radiation.

In terms of the resolution though, personally *I'd* rather have a lower res than 1440xwhatever on a 15" notebook. I think that's crazy high, although just on the verge of being useable. That same resolution on a 17" notebook is pretty nice (though my desktop monitors are 1280x1024 19" models, and THAT res I have to blow everything up quite a bit to see it).

    its not necessary of course.

but it is a nice things to have, and if u can and want to keep the laptop for more than a year or two, then i suggest u get it.

    i might repeat some but...

    it offers:
    longer life
no warm up time (the light is bright immediately)
    better colour
    thinner casing
    more envirometally friendly
    brighter
more graduation between dark and bright settings

where about do you find that the led light dont spew UV?!?
the best resolution on 15 notebook is 1440x900. you dont really wanna go 1280x800, as it is a bit small for 15" notebook. you can of course go higher and that fits more stuff which is nice. but 1680xiforgot is too small. and i cant imagine how 1920x1080 is on laptop 0.O

1440x900 over 1280 is just an opinion not a fact. They are only different in resolution, and they are practically use the same pannel technology. LED is just another backlight technology, but the pannel technology is still the same like ccfl. Personally, I would get LED for my new laptop, but it is not a deal breaker for me.

Anybody know why they don't make 1280 with LED? This would be the perfect screen for me in 14". I would get the LED but I think 1440x900 on a 14" is just too small (around 120 ppi). I don't use my laptop for games, just text, and while I could adjust the text size it seems like it would be annoying. I guess the other option is to go up to a 15.4" screen with LED, which would have roughly the same ppi as a 1280 resolution on a 14" (around 110 ppi).

Its just a manufacturer's choice to not make it. Eventually they might once there is a large enough market, but for now they are going for the majority of consumers.

hmmm. That's nice to know...Well, I looked at both..when I was looking at the 1530's back in Jan, and chose the 1440x900 over the 1280, as it was what *worked for me* ;) :)

About LED I do not know (I have never seen one) but the resolution is purely a matter of taste.
Personnaly after using a 1680x1050 resolution screen I am not going back to 1280 ones.
Others will say the contrary. It is purely a matter of personal taste. Try going in a store and looking for laptops with the different options and choose the one you like.

Having owned a notebook with an LED screen, I consider that one of my requirements for future notebook purchases. I just prefer it over CCFL screens. However, if there is a notebook that I like without an LED option I would still probably purchase it.

I really would like an LED one though.... ;)

I've been really tempted at various points by both that Gateway laptop, and the XPS 1730. Was microns away from getting the 1730, but I just decided I wouldn't go without LED. I'd still order the thing now if they'd just let you throw the Studio 17's screen on there (which is probably a CHEAPER screen, but I'd gladly PAY them more for it!)

In my opinion, the LED screen is not a necessity. I have an m1530 with an LCD and my girlfriend has an m1330 with an LED screen. There is a difference in brightness but it's not a dealbreaker. If you need to cut costs then I would go with the LCD.

They're both LCD screens. The difference is the backlight, either LED or CCFL. CCFLs also fade quickly, whereas LED's last longer than the life of any computer, so the difference will get more pronounced.

1280 is pretty much less in demand because it's not a wide-screen resolution, that's why.

There are high end LED screens out there, it's not going to be cheap. 1440 are the mainstream LED screens right now.

    Perhaps Vision33r is confusing 1280x1024 with 1280x800.
