I got the bare bones Inspiron 1525.

    Celeron 550 2.0ghz processor
1gb Ram (already have more to add)
    80gb memory
    cdrw/dvd-rom

My question is, should I change my order and upgrade the processor to the Intel dual core t2390 for $50 more?

I've always had luck with the celerons in the past, but am thinking I may need to upgrade to run vista.

With this setup, is the upgrade to the pentium dual core worth the $50?

I'd say it's worth it to pay yet another $50 to go from the Pentium to the Core 2 Duo for added power efficiency and battery life.

Did you just order this evening?? Be prepared that if you change your order..it will probably be *cancelled*, and you will start fresh with a new order (the process starts all over) ;) :)

At least you are making the decision to change soon than later, so it's not that far into the process ;) :)

    Good luck ;) :)

Yes, I would definitely do the upgrade. I didn't realize they were still selling celerons. With a gig of ram and 80gb hard drive, you should be much better off getting the upgrade. Sorry you have to cancel your order, but you will be much happier in the end.

Depending on what you are doing with it, if you are looking for the cheapest and most basic system, thats fine... but for the sake of having better technology at an also currently cheap price, Core 2 Duo would be the better option. :)

I wouldn't recommend the upgrade. You would probably see more of a boost from having at least 2 gigs of ram. The processor that you are stepping up to IS NOT a core 2 Duo. It is the Pentium Core Duo, which is a step up from the celeron, but not a very big one. If you go to Intels website you can look a break down of their current mobile chips. In a nutshell it goes celeron > Pentium (confusing I know) > Core 2 Duo

Unless you are going to be running demanding apps I would recommend putting the money in RAM and storage. Vista is a fat OS and fat OSes and programs like memory. You rarely notice a difference in day to day stuff using a 'budget' vs 'high performance' processor.

You can get an upgraded 1525 for only $520. This was posted on slickdeals.net. Heres the link:

    http://configure.us.dell.com/dellst...c=US&l=EN&vw=list&dgc=CJ&cid=24471&lid=566643

If that doesn't work here is the link to the slickdeal thread: http://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.php?t=887496

They say its dead but its not. The configuration is $599 but go to the software section and downgrade the Microsoft Works Plus to Microsoft Works which will take $79 off the price making it $520. Hurry I doubt the deal will last long. For $20 you get a much faster C2D, 1GB extra Ram, wireless-n, larger hard drive, webcam, dvd writer upgrade, and in-home service warranty upgrade.
