Congrats on the order. One recommendation would be to upgrade the RAM (now or later) after market for cheaper. That way, you have atleast 1GB to go along with the machine. But I see you ordered it with 512MB (2 DIMMS), leaving no empty slot. You could call now that your order is placed and ask them to upgrade kindly to 1 DIMM or if you can, pay to have it upgraded in order to have the free slot.

    1GB+ = Ultimate performance.

fyi, dell will be updating the 9300 in january, but the price will be high so that deal is much better than what you would be able to get then.

What components will be updated? (A rough idea).

And is the 9300 the only machine to be updated? Or are all? Something to do with new line of processors?

NO! Leave it at what you have, True you could get more memory, but the Memory Bandwidth you'd get with the 2x256 because its in dual channel would be far more benefical. Only do the upgrade to 1 DIMM if your planning on buying another 512 stick right away, remember that it needs to be the SAME MODEL memory, otherwise Dual Channel WILL not work.

new dual core processor (Intel NAPA), true life screen (glossy), nvidia geforce go 7 series, express card slot (no pcmcia, just express card -- kinda blows). unfortunately still the same silly white bumper look. initially it will just be the 9300 updated for jan., no others.

I see. I still don't know the scoop on dual core processors. When will the processors (and machines) used now be titled 'officially out of date'?

Worth the wait or okay to buy now (and use for a good 3 - 4 years)

O crap... I could waited til January and i just ordered! No!!! Any mention of initial pricing?

And gains from dual channel is not worth the free slot. Dual core is interesting tech!

$2,300 to start, $2,000 after usual offers...it'd be Jan 6th it's available but i can guarantee you of shipping delays with shortages of the processor so it'd be february before you'd have any chance of getting it.

well, dell indicated to us 30% improved processor performance with old 2.0GHz versus new dual core 2.0GHz. Impressive. Seeing you could run Doom 3 and burn a DVD with much more ease using dual core it'd be worth it if you do multitasking with intense cpu resource applications. if not, well, todays chips are good.

Hmmm, interesting. For most machines, will it just be the processor updated basically with everything else remaining the same? How about pricing (in general for dual core)? Will the 710m be updated as well?

definitely no 710m updates for a while, the 9300 will be the only one for January, Latitudes in February and then March/April for much of anything else. I don't know specifics though -- they only tell us so far ahead.

Too bad offers don't reach Malaysia (rationalizing) Anyway, wouldn't that price make their new 9300s compete directly with their XPS line? Or will they be putting a much weaker 7 series in it?

they'll distinguish the xps by upgrading to the latest nvidia card at the time and i believe it's a card that'll be a notch below the 7800.

Hmm, 7800 512MB Go?! :p I asked the sales rep like 5 days ago and he said there will only be Yonahs come March. Sigh... Do Dell allow returns if i have not opened the box and bought it using someone's employee discount?

HAHA Ardor...if it is not opened..sell it on Ebay, I know a few people that bought with discounts :750: and sold it on Ebay for a substancial profit. I don't think that would work trying to return it. Nice try though :)

so if the 7800 does come out in jan. for the 9300, can we buy the 7800 from the parts department and upgrade?

Im assuming you already have a 9300?

If not, and your asking if you can buy a 9300 and upgrade it later, yes you can do that. It would be allowed under warranty.

Just make sure that whatever you upgrade it too, that Dell supports that exact model you upgrade it too, such as if you were to order one right now and see the best graphics card for it is um Geforce 7800GT, and you just get the lower end now, make sure its nothing other than what they say. So Geforce 7800GTX would be out of the question.

I discussed this with SouthernGirl under the "Whats allowed under dell warrenty" thread check it out for more info.

You have to know once something is released, its not really gonna be available on "shelfs" right away. typically it takes a month or 2 before it's ready for the mass market. Just know if you decide to cancel your order now, you'll be expecting a wait.

Eventualy I will get 2gb of ram so there is no need to change what i got. The new dual core seems interesting but I am happy with what i got. Lots of people are putting a 7800 in their 9300. you just need the 9 cell battery and a 130 watt power adapter. I think it voids the warranty though. If really wanted to I could probably make a profit selling it like USAFdude02 said.

but january will be ther release of the new video card for the 9300. does anybody know what it will be? if it is going to be from the geforce 7 series, it would be the 7800gtx go or the 7300 go as of now. Will nvidia come out with any new 7 series gpus in the coming month?

I hope that it is something that can at least compare to the 6800 Go Ultra. I mean I benchmark near what they do since I OC'ed...but still I would love to run my VC stock and get the same performance.

As far as I have seen it will be the same "Trulife" screen. I don't think that is official yet though. I am kinda thinking it will be a Samsung or LG.

But I thought the I9300 already had a Truelife option? Or were you referring to a new WXGA+ Truelife screen? I don't care about the new CPU and GPU, but if Dell decides to release a new glossy 1440x900, the next-gen I9300 might as well be worth the wait.

edit: I'm planning to get a new laptop real soon BTW. Selling my desktop in a week or two.

Just send the laptop in and have the High Gloss Application done on it, there are company's out there such as PixelBright which will for a 100.00 change your matte into a high gloss screen.

So really, no need to wait.

Seeing that your in British Columbia, shipping might be a burden?

i dont see the 1440x900 as a truelife option because they want you to spend the 150 more for the 1920x1200 screen. marketing crap...

Please show me benchmarks where 2x256mb sticks running dual channel provide more performance than a single 1gb stick running on it's own.

    I'd love to see this.

You could argue the dual channel thing all you want. I'm sticking with my 1gb stick (adding another after xmas). I'm pretty sure my increase from 55 fps in America's Army (Hospital map) to 73 fps (averages) show that dual channel didn't help me as much as the increase in my memory capacity.

Oh, when I run a single stick of memory, I use less voltage as well, maybe that's why :)

Not trying to be rude. :dell:
