Just ordered the following configuration from DELL Japan. What do you guys think ?

    Specs :
    Windows Vista Home premium
    Core 2 Duo T5500 (2MB cache, 1.66GHz, 667 FSB)
    1GB (2x512) DDR 2 667MHz RAM
    120GB SATA (5400 RPM)
    12. TFT TrueLife(TM) WXGA
    AV Package
    DVD+/-RW (Dual layer drive)
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 256MB DDR TurboCache
    9 Cell battery
    Core Duo/Core 2 Duo Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
    10/100 Ethernet
    Built-in Bluetooth
4 Year next business day service within Japan + International warranty
4 Year Complete care service (Including protection against theft)

Total : USD 1370 with shipping and tax

For USD 150 more I could have ordered the T7200 processor and 2GB RAM with 1 year standard warranty without complete care, but decided against it at the last moment. Cos my budget is only 1400 :(

Might have been worth saving for another month to get the T7200, but other than that it looks good. Seems like a great price. Congrats man... or woman... ummm... Person!

    God I hate being pc!

I'm a guy :p , a student to be precise. I can still cancel the order, but is there a big difference between T7200 and T5500 ? okey it has 2MB more cache and 400Mhz faster clock speed, but is it worth $250 ? From what I have read the performance difference is not more than 10%.

For some reason upgrading predefined configurations in the Japanese site increases the price ridiculously. For example if I want to upgrade from T5500 to T7200 I have to pay extra $250 or if I wanted 2GB again $250 but there is a preconfigured option with both for only $350. That’s why I said that if I gave up complete care warranty then I could have taken the T7200 and 2GB for around $200 more. Crazy pricing scheme.

    Here are my options
    Above system for $1370
    with T7200 $1620
    T7200 with 2GB $1720
T7200 with 2GB with 1 year warranty (No complecare) $1520

All would do you well, the ram is easily self upgraded, the cpu isnt, that said I wouldnt see you bottlenecking yourself with any core cpu right now. Heavy video encoding and serious photoshop work would be some examples where the 70000 series would help you a bit(the difference isnt drastic), in games it wont really help much at all as the video card will bottleneck your system long befor the cpu. If I were in your shoes, and looking for the best bang for the buck, I would go with the first system and make immediate plans for 2gb ram upgrade. I personally would forgo the extra warranty, but that s just personal pref. Good luck, and whicever config you end up with you should enjoy it quite a bit.

I would have gotten a smaller but faster HDD. Also the upgrade to T7200 and 2gb of RAM isnt 150. Its more like 450 if you factor in the warranty. I dont think you need CompleteCare however and 3 year warranty is enough. I would cancel and reorder it with less warranty and upgrade to a faster CPU. 1GB of RAM is fine for now and you can upgrade yourself for cheaper. See if you can get a 1 DIMM option so you wont have to waste a 512mb stick.

edit: saw in another thread that CompleteCare for you is $75. If that is the case stick with it.

When thinking about it again, I feel like canceling the order and waiting for another month or so to see if the prices come down. I really like to get the T7200 and more ram.

Even though I don't have a PC with me now I can arrange something for a little longer. I decided to get the complete care 4 year option because that particular option had a special discount making it almost half the regular price.

BTW how can I cancel an order ? Do I have to talk to them or is there an option in their web site?

While browsing, I also came across a Toshiba 15” notebook for around the same price : $1375.
    C2D T5600 / 1GB (512 x 2) / Go 7600 256MB dedicated, even though 15” is bit too big for my liking the 7600 card really caught my eye.

The final alternative is to get a Sony Vaio C series 13.3 / C2D 7200 /Go 7400/ 512MB(upgrade later) / 60GB (upgrade later)/ DVDRW for $1250. I didn’t think much about this because when I called Sony support they said they only ship with Japanese OS and if I install Eng OS it will void warranty ?? I know that installing an OS shouldn't void warranty, but who knows, maybe that is their policy.

I think you have to actually call in or talk to the CS online to cancel the other.

The 7600 would be a good fit if gaming is important, if its not the 7600 would be on the verge of way overkill, offering more cons than pros, namely size, heat and battery life.

You should call Dell to cancel, and keep a record of the case file and save any emails just in case something slips through the cracks.

Agreed. A lot of people complain about the size of the XPS M1210. But if Dell took things out like the optical drive and the discrete graphics to thin it up, then people would complain about it not having those items.

Then once Dell puts in a GO 7400, people cry about not having a GO 7600.

and if dell DID put in a GO 7600 people would complain about the size, heat, and battery life.

Dell pulled off nothing short of a miracle getting a 7400 in a 12.1 chassis, its going to be awhile before they can top that feat.

Finally canceled the order; so back to the waiting game again :( .

Yeah I agree that anything better than a Go 7400 wouldn't fit in a 12.1 chassis. However a Go 7600/7700 can be put in a 14.1 (Asus has already proven that with A8J). Now, that is the ideal balance between performance and portability. Unfortunately here in Japan it is next to impossible to find an Asus notebook.

I'm impatiently waiting for DELL to release a good coupon (Yes DELL Japan’s Inspiron coupons are valid for M1210 :p ) or the price of T7200 to come down. Right now only 8% off coupon , there was a huge 20% off coupon last November :( . hope something like that comes along soon

    8x cd/dvd RW
4 year warranty with 24hour on site

There will always be a better deal, the waiting game can last a lifetime if you let it. Prices will always drop....eventually, new tech is always on the horizon, the best thing to do is to do your homework, then buy what you need/want when you find it at a fair price you can afford, and dont worry if jimbob saved a few more bills than you did. When dell releases really big coupons, the overall price usually inflates enough to offset it, I would've stuck with the order, the 7200 isnt going to be a night and day difference, to me it wasnt worth the price premium.

OK, Finally I ordered and paid ! So no going back.

    From : DELL Japan
    Specs : M1210
    Vista Ultimate Edition with Bitlocker
    Core 2 Duo T7200 (4MB / 2.GHz)
    2GB DDR2 (667Mhz)
    120GB (5400RPM)
    12. TFT TrueLife(TM) WXGA
    AV Package
    DVD+/-RW (Dual layer drive)
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400 256MB DDR TurboCache
    6 Cell battery
    Core Duo/Core 2 Duo Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
    10/100 Ethernet
    Built-in Bluetooth
    3 Year warranty
    1 Year Complete care

    Total : USD 1510

I thought of maybe buying a 7200RPM disk but the cheapest 7200RPM option was 80GB and that added extra USD40 (over 120GB pre configured option). So I thought maybe I’ll buy it later if I feel the need. Cos I can buy an 80G 7200 for around USD80, only USD 40 more than DELL price but also get to keep the 120G.

I only changed warranty in the pre-configured setup, changing anything else added more, even downgrading to Vista Home Premium costs more  ; a crazy pricing scheme.

are you sure thats not 3 years complete care? I thought it was the same price for 1 year 2 years 3 years and 4 years, so long as your base warranty was a certain length.

    very good price.

Yes I'm sure. DELL JP charges for standard warranty and complete care separately. You can order with any combination of warranty and CC options ranging from 1 to 4 years (Warranty period must be >= CC period).

Their options and policies are different than US. AFAIK they don't have any return policies nor refurbished products like in US dell outlet.

i guess that's one advantage of Dell USA.

I got 4 year ltd. warranty/parts/labor/24 hour on site/and 4 years complete care for $220. I guess that's not too bad.

Well… I also could have taken the 4 year Warranty+CC cover for another $200 or so, but even now I am 100 ~ 150 over my initial budget. So my options were

    1. 4 Yr CC with slower spec (T5500 and maybe 1GB Ram)
    2. My current spec
    3. My current spec + 4 Yr CC then few weeks without food

    So I chose 2nd option. :p
