    You could try a live distro first, it would be quite safe to try as the distro would be loaded into memory and would not mess with the harddrive.

    You can use Dell coupons, which are issued by Dell that gives coupon users a discount. Coupon values vary, so be sure to grab the biggies like the $750 or the 30% off ones if you're looking at getting a Dell notebook.
