Picture of my issue:

So I just placed an order for my laptop as well as a 22" monitor (Dell E228FP). Now, I expected that it would take probably about a week to make the actual laptop, and then maybe a week to ship it out once that was done. At the absolute worst I figured it would be here by the end of June or at TOTAL WORST the beginning of July. But not shipping until August 3rd? Is that a typo or something?
Is this at all normal? Do the laptops really take that long to make? Is it because of the monitor that its going to take so long? Is there anyway to tell Dell to ship them separately? I can wait for the monitor if its going to take that long, but I'd like to be able to have the laptop for a month or two before I go off to college so I can see if I need anything else with it before I go.
Please tell me this is common after just placing an order and that it will be fixed in the next day or two with an accurate ship date.
Thanks.

I would say don't take it to heart on the ship date. I've ordered a ton of dell stuff in the past and even recently, if anything, they always surprise me by how quick they ship out things. Since it's a built to order laptop, it should get to you in a reasonable amount of time, but i'm almost certain you don't have to wait that long. If you just ordered it, check back everyday or every few days and see the progress, if nothing changes after a week, you can give them a call to check on update and verify.
But no, I highly doubt the ship date is correct, they might as well just put year 2010 =P so don't worry
Also, most of these computers, monitors, acessories come in various boxes so form my experience, they ship them as they are done.

Alright, thank you good sir! I was pretty POed for a few minutes there. And by the last statement in your post I am assuming I could very well get one item before the other? I assume I would get the monitor first if anything since they really don't have to customize anything about it. Any info about that?
-
Hmm.. not sure, they could ship them together, I don't want to mis lead you but you could... call them or use their online chat and talk to one of their rep. Yes.. the reps are over in india but be nice, answer their question regarding your order number and they can get the info you need regarding your order.
Now on the other hand... me trying to figure out the 112 whr and the 56 whr battery and doing battery exchanges for 7 times shipped overnight to me and getting the "wrong" battery.. going thru customer support, case managers, escalation team... now that is a different story... =P... so I've had my fair share of bad experience but they are exceptional cases that most dell customers wont deal with on a normal baseshehe..

The reason why I know they ship things out fast, is... when they were trying to send me the right battery... I talked to them until like 4pm PST here in California, I got the replacement battery the NEXT DAY in the morning... so.. props to them for that. They manage to ship it out DHL Express when it was like 7pm EST and I had it in my hands by noon the next day. This went on 7-8 times, and my recent order of the XPS M2010 laptop also arrived in less then a week after I placed the order.

Don't take the delivery and estimated dates to heart.
I've ordered hundreds of computers from Dell and they always ship sooner. -
The issue is the monitor. The E228WFP is back order. My friend ordered one on May 16th and yesterday Dell told her to wait another 11 days... (order was in Canada but Dell told her the monitor are shipped directly from Texas)
I like the old french saying: c'est vraiment n'importe quoi! -
The monitors are indeed backordered...I had to wait a little while for mine.
-
From my experience, they usually have a laptop delivered 7 days before the Estimated Ship Date. I am unsure about LCD TV's but I have a feeling that they should deliver that sooner.
-
So are they going to wait to send the laptop until the monitor is back in stock, or will they just send the laptop when its ready, and send the monitor a few weeks later? I mean, I can wait for the monitor, but I would REALLY like to have the laptop sometime soon.
Also, to Forte, even 7 days before the estimated ship date still seems like a REALLY long time to wait, over a month in fact. I was expecting it to be shipped and at my door within two weeks. Was that an unreasonable expectation?
So what do I do now, can I contact Dell and tell them to send the laptop when its ready and send the monitor separately, or will they ship together when the monitor is ready? -
They gave me a delivery date that was over a month.
However, they delivered it in 7 days.
I love this Dell policy. -
did you consistently check the order status? Did they ever update it, or did your laptop just show up on your door step one day despite dell still saying it was going to take a month?
-
On the Dell website, it was in pre-production for some time.
Then suddenly, all the check boxes were ticked and it was dispatched! It happened so quickly I missed out all the middle stages (i.e. production, packaging).
Then I went to the carrier website, which gave an exact estimate of the delievery date (two days) and ta-da, it arrived exactly 7 days after the order, even though the Dell estimated delivery time was originally something like 40 days.
The reason for the long estimated ETA is that one of the parts I ordered was currently out of stock. However they eventually delivered it lightning-fast, and I couldn't be more pleased.
My advice is to call the Dell people, they will tell you if it is an "out of stock" problem and when it will be resolved.
Good luck! -
Well, I don't remember which item that I ordered was in pre-production yesterday, but now they are both "in production" so its progressing I suppose.
-
So I was just in contact with a Dell agent via the chat on Dell's website. He told me that the estimated shipping dates for both items I purchased were correct. He did tell me the same thing that all of you have been saying though, and that is that the items usually ship ahead of the scheduled date. He also told me that the Laptop will ship separately if it is ready before the monitor, which made me very happy.
At the end of our conversation he even said he would put in a request to expedite my order. I don't know if he will actually do that, or what kind of effect it would have on the ship date, but I still appreciated it.
So if any of you ever have an issue like that, I think it would be worth trying to contact them via phone, email, or through the chat. -
lol...
Lenovo'd. -
So now the once pending transaction on my debit card has disappeared. Now there is no sign of a charge on my card at all, but when I check my order status on the Dell site, its all still there and everything. So what is up with that?
-
I talked to a Dell rep and they said that the debit card thing is normal, they basically hold the funds when you place the order then don't REALLY take out the payment until they ship the system.
BTW, IT SHIPPED YESTERDAY!!! I'm crazy excited!! Its suppose to be here between 20-22. It said it was being delivered on DHL Express ground. Is that the normal shipment method? Just wondering, no big deal either way.
Woooot.
Just ordered today, estimated shipping date 8/3/2007?!?!
