I purchased a Dell e1505 a few months ago for my mom and she LOVES it.

3 weeks ago, my current HP laptop blew out (motherboard) so I looked to replace it. It was a ZT3010 and I ordered a dv2000t. This would have been my 6th HP laptop. It arrived last Friday and suffice to say, I hated it. :( Called Saturday morning and they agreed to RMA -- and were very kind about it!

I did some surfing to see what other recommendations were out there and found this site. I have NO CLUE why I have never found this place before -- it is beyond question the motherlode for laptop information. What a valuable resource you all are!

Based on feedback here and my Mom's experience with her e1505, I ordered a Dell e1405 late Saturday afternoon, July 29th.

Believe it or not -- FedEx is showing shipment for tomorrow (Tuesday Aug 1). Impressive. :)

    Specs are:

    Inspiron E1405
    Intel® Core™ Proc Duo T2500 (2.00GHz/667MHz/2 X 1MB L2 Cache)
    14.1 inch WXGA+ UltraSharp™ TFT Display with TrueLife™
    Memory 2GB DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHZ, 2 DIMM
    60GB 7200RPM Sata Hard Drive
    8X CD/DVD Burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
Integrated Sound Blaster® Audigy™ HD Software Edition
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery

I am a programmer, not an artist or gamer -- and thanks to you kind folks, I believe that I have found a laptop perfectly suited for my needs for the next 2 years until it is time to update again.

    Much appreciation for your community...

Question, what about the HP did you hate? I actually considered the HP instead of the E1405 ...

By the way, I'm sure you'll the E1405 -- its a nice machine.

That's a very quick turnaround time for it to be shipped - congratulations on the notebook. Hopefully the E1405 will work out better for you. What exactly didn't you like about the dv2000?

And thanks for joining our forums.

Hi all and thanks for the welcome. :)

I didn't like the new keyboard layout on the HP. Where F & J are centered across the touchpad on most machines, the dv2000t features a new layout with home/end/pg up/pgdn on the right -- so the J key is smack in the middle of the touchpad, causing the palm of the thumb to rest on it. I was turning it off to type and back on to use the mouse.

According to HP, it is a love it/hate it thing, and all of their laptops (even the desktop replacement sizes) are now featuring it.

What little I used it, I was impressed with the performance though. Very responsive, even though it did geta bit warm on the left palm rest soon after booting (and didn't cool off). I have a Latitude D810 at work that hasn't given me any problems -- so am looking forward to the e1405.

I will miss HP though. Their service over the years has always been prompt and very courteous. If Dell's service is anywhere near as effective as their shipping speed, I will be quite happy to deal with them!

i had the hp zv6000 and i also hated the keyboard. The page up/dwn keys and the del, insert, hme,end are on the far right and the delete key is a bit hard to find. it becomes irritating after a while
