I would like to know the best way to clean it up--get rid of all the bloatware and unnecessary junk that will slow it down. I've heard from some people that you should format and reinstall everything. Is this the best way to do it? That seems like a pretty long process and I thought there might be a faster way of doing it.

    Suggestions?

well my friend just uninstalled most of the stuff, but I would reinstall vista. It's not that tedious of a task.

by the way you should post some pics of your 1420.

yea reinstall Vista and you should be fine. as was pointed out in a previous thread, dont bother formatting as there is no need to considering it is brand new.

Download all the drivers you need right now. Burn them to a CD/copy to flash memory.

Format, reinstall Vista, install drivers. Bingo...nice clean OS install.

My main concern wirth re-installing is losing the Media Direct 3. Unless it is loaded on the drivers disk that Dell sent.

Yes it did come with media direct on a separate CD. Would I have to re-install that as well if I re-installed Vista?

theres probably only 3-5 junk software in the machine anyways, its not really going to improve your performance even if you remove them. just use the windows uninstall

Other than re-installing media direct and Vista did you have to re-install anything else? You wouldn't have to re-install drivers if you don't format right?

You should always check for new drivers...even if you chose not to re-install Vista. It is likely that the drivers that came with your Dell would be old.

Go to Dell's website and check for the latest drivers for the 1420.
