yay! I finally got the m1210 laptop (1 hour ago).

But unfortunately, the complaints about the terrible screen are true.

Anyways aside from the screen, the laptop is so far living up to all the hype.

2 questions for you laptop experts out there:

    1. I ordered from Dell Canada and my package came with all the stuff (cds, earphones, small nylon baggie for cds etc.) I did not receive a cd wallet. Did everyone else get a wallet?

    2. Is there a limited number of times I can install/reinstall vista? For now I want to use my 2 year old copy of windows xp (that I got for free from staples!!). So far I haven't been prompted to validate my copy of vista is this normal?

    thanks all.

Yeah, that's personally the thing that turned me off of the XPSM1210 (as well as the non-premium Vaio SZ). I generally liked the rest of it, but just found the screen to not be as bright as I'd like. Ended up going with the LED backlit SZ460.

I'm looking forward to LED-backlighting becoming more common, which sounds like it will be happening soon.

Hi, congrats on the purchase. Thanks for the reply. I guess I'll phone in tomorrow if I have time and ask why they didn't include it.

Yea, one of the best features of the Dell OEM OS cd/dvds is that they automaticaly are validated when installed on dell computers (they dont work on other systems) It detects the Dell bios. That means you can reinstall as many times as you want.

Just curious how much did it cost to buy the laptop to all those who bought the m1210 in canada. I am also residing in canada and I was thinking of buying a 1210 so I'd be interested to know how much it cost each one (and the configs)

The M1210 ain't cheap. You may want to look at a 640m perhaps.

    Does the 256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7400 TurboCache™ on m1210 perform better than the 256MB ATI X1400 on Inpiron 6400/E1505?

i heard the 7400 go and the x1400 are pretty much the same, although some games perform better on the x1400 and some performs better on the 7400. I don't think there i smuch difference between the 2. I just tried Oblivion and Fear on my 7400 this morning and they run very smoothly in medium settings.

Jokkon - Do you find your LCD sensitive to bumps, touching, moving cover in that it easily has waves in the display when its moved? My Compaq isn't as sensitive as the M1210. Nothing major just a minor thing I noticed.

does the 7400 share the 256 mb with the system RAM ? or is it like the x1400 with 128mb dedicated and the other half shared?

if its only 64mb dedicated and the rest is shared then i guess that the x1400 would perform better, it has twice as much dedicated memory so I'd think that its a better video card than the 7400

I'm so glad I read this post. I thought the M1210 was supposed to have a nice bright screen. If there is one thing I can't stand, it's a dim screen. That's one of the reasons I won't buy a Thinkpad anymore. No more flexview for them, so no more Thinkpads for me. Guess I'll go the premium SZ route.

Well, if you get a chance, try and take a look at an XPSM1210 yourself. I was lucky enough to be able to get a chance to see it because they had a Dell kiosk at my locall mall where they had all the different Dell laptops out to try out.

I personally think I might be in the minority when it comes to the XPSM1210 screen; I've seen plenty of owners say the screen is just fine for them, so to some degree it comes down to personal tastes.

For that matter, I've seen people who had no problems with the non-premium SZ screens too, but I personally found them to be darker and not have as crisp and bright an image overall, leading me to go with the SZ460.

But really, try and take a personal look at one if you can; I think there are plenty of very happy XPSM1210 owners out there that indicate not everyone sees the screen the same way.

Wow, now I'm really glad I didn't get a Sony. The M1210 seems extremely bright to me, to the point that I sometimes turn it down a few notches when looking at a very light screen.

the m1210 screen is so bright that it hurts my eyes looking at it for too long so britness is not an issue but it has pretty poor viewing angle though. i find myself adjusting the angle of the screen ervery now and then

For Canadians looking for a decent deal on this system, check out the current config at dell.ca. If you take off the upgraded warranty you can get a decent config for $1339 (includes 7400 Geforce Go and A/V communications package -- everything else is base config). I think this pricing ends today (March 25)...but there are always these kinds of deals at Dell.
