And they slated the Vostro! saying it would only last a few months and can only handle one application at a time! the guy even said it would only last a 5 months!

I told them it would be used for some photoshop work and some gaming, and they just said the components couldnt handle it and the battery would die quicker than the XPS (for good not just on consumption!!!)

Now obviously they were only saying this so that they could sell me an XPS but still not very good brand protection is it? Anyone else had this?

    Anyone else had this?

Also apparently some really good deals for the UK market being introduced tomorrow. So i'm waiting another day

Wow, that's pretty damning taken literally isn't it?!

I think you're right to believe that they were merely trying to sell you the more expensive unit, and the Vostro is, as the old Inspiron chassis it was built on: pretty robust.

I can only assume that the next Vostro update will again recycle the chassis from the new Inspiron. (Painted black of course!) :)

Oh yeah, he was definitely trying to sell you a load of.....nonesense. XPS is a more powerful machine in general, but it's not like a Vostro is a glorified calculator.

So I just checked the Oxford English Dictionary and...

    'Main Entry:
    Vostro
    Pronunciation:
    \voh-stro\
    Function:
    noun
    Etymology:
from Latin nomen — more at name

: any member of a class of notebooks that are in essence glorified calculators.'

well they just called back, still slagging of the Vostro, saying that the motherboard is not fully compatable with the 256mb 8600m GT grapics card and that the XPS and Inspiron is a better option etc etc.

Also would not offer any additional discount unless i took extra cover. :(

    £684 including vat for vostro 1700, T9300 2.5Ghx 6mb Cache, 3gb ram, 250gb hd, 256mb gt graphics. 1440x900 with trulife, bluetooth, ect.

should i go for it, or call again and speak to another person and see what i can do?

I've just thought, do these guys actually make any commision selling Vostros to individuals? They're supposed to be bought by business users and business account holders. Whereby I can only imagine the commision earnt is higher for bulk sales and not per unit, like it would be for a 'consumer grade' Inspiron or XPS.

That's a cracking deal you've been quoted by the way. If you were to try and spec. one of the new Inspirons like for like with that Vostro, I think you'd see a considerable saving make itself apparent to you.

Dell is trying to get you to pay extra for the XPS. I have a Vostro (inspiron 1520) and I definitely do many things at once.

not sure if they do to be honest mate. could be a reason they don't discount.

just compared it to the US price and its around £40 cheaper in the UK for the same system

If you want to know if your salesman is BSing you, ask him if he thinks you should get an Inspiron instead. If he says yes, you can safely disregard anything he has to say about the quality of the Vostro.

I presume the OP means Indian call centre when he refers to UK sales...unless he's got hold of someone in Ireland.

I certainly wouldn't trust their opinion on the matter...especially if they are pushing other (and likely) more expensive units.
