The ram installation of 512 to 256 MB went smoothly. My neighbor's kid (12years) just installed it....must be her math/geometry backgrd, for she had to tell me to read instructions and install at a 45 degree angle. My attack angle was more 30 and I did not fully seat the module.

I have one question though. I do not want AOL and have used Dell's/Microsoft's Remove program and procedure. However, after rebooting, the AOL is still on my desktop. So, I retry another Remove procedure and the answer is that there is no AOL program. I then try to drag the AOL logo off into the trash and when I initiate Empty trash, the warning prompt says it is not permitted. Did I again do something wrong? No, the kid is not around! She got school tomorrow. So please send some advice.
    Thank you all again.
    Sincerely,
    macmac

    Dear eaadams,

Please forgive the question. Is this a delete command of somekind? Will this reformat the c drive and get rid of my "old" drive's contents?

Thanks for your time and reply.
    Sincerely,
    macmac

Yes that will indeed wipe your hard drive and you would have to reinstall EVERYTHING.

It sounds to me like there is a system process that is running and therefore not letting you delete files associated with it.

If you hit "control alt delete" all at the same time a dialog box will appear. Click on the "processes" tab and in there look for anything associated with AOL. If/when you find it highlight it with your mouse and click "end process". Click ok to the warning dialog, then try to empty the recycle bin.

    Dear IllegalOperation,

Lucky for me that I did not use that entry; ohterwise, my schedule would be upset due to reloading everything back! I will try what you wrote when I get to my office.

This AOL is tenacious as a octopus! I never liked AOL and want it out. But thanks for your help. It will be tried in about 2 hours or so. If I do not post, work intervened. But will try it.
By the way, a tech from Dell told me that some laptops won't eject dvds if they get hot - I guess the drive's door gets a little warped(?) and cannot release even though you can hear a faint click as you try to eject. Keep a paper clip handy. I had to use this procedure once. But this Dell is still a keeper!
    Thanks again IllegalOperation.
    Sincerely, macmac

    Dear IllegalOperation,

It worked! Do not know what I did but the procedure you mentioned did indeed turn off the AOL - it is deleted. BUT, there are still remnants of AOL. The system says it doesn' exist; however, it is still listed in the folders. Man, talk about unwanted guests!

Much thanks though. Will hopefully get well acquainted with this little machine.

    Sincerely,
    macmac

    To All,
Is it me or has my post been tampered with? I have no idea where the linking ability of key words on the initial posting occurred - I have no skills in that department. See the underlined words and run your mouse cursor over it. No biggy but I want to let the moderaotrs know that it was not me! Sorry if it screws up the forum's policies.
But I would like to be able to do such things on the internet!

    Sorry, I am leaving now.

Just delete any folder named AOL and you will be fine.

Most people who get Dells reformat the hard drive and start afresh installing only whats needed and nothing else. This is the easiest way to fully remove all the junk that Dell puts on (cleaning the registry and everything). However I really feel that you are not ready for this, it would be wise to learn a little more or get someone with you who is familer with reinstall. By the way it has been nagging at me to ask you what on earth made you leave a fine O/S such as the Unix based Mac for Windows. I am sure you have your reasons but there I got it off my chest [ :p]

    Dear IllegalOperation,

Just about to turn in (strange hrs in Hawaii-its 4am), but had to reply on your system question. No problems with Mac stuff since day one of owning a G3 Pismo Pwrbook. Never owned a desktop either! All my computing (up to this month) as been handled well with G3 and now G4s Pwrbooks. My purchase of the Dell 700m was due to my need to practice on a windows platform. My experience with Virtual PC was not very good. I also hated that it took up space on my HD and it was slow.

The Dell suited my needs for something that would not tie me down like a desktop, for I am on the move. And I run into associates that hate macs! This is a world that is viewed through WINDOWS. The Dell 700m is a fun machine to play with. It did have some hang-ups but not as much as to complain about it.

The Dell will never replace my G4 Powerbooks (two 1.5GHz and 1.33GHz 17"). I always carry a G4 with the Dell! Best (my opinion) of both worlds. Anyway, sorry to carry on. Thanks for the heads-up. I hope to know the windows side well enough to take it for granted like I do with the macs.
    Take care and thanks again.
    Sincerely, macmac

I also just purchased a 700m....dumped AOL via Add/Remove progs then manually picked out the remants via Windows Explorer.

I am pretty much a newbie lappy user/buyer. I would love to increase my knowledge and confidently reformat HD's etc, but alas I lack the skills.
The 700 seems a nice machine, but the screen is v small...the stretched 12" config takes some getting used to. I have it set to max res but it's still hard to view text sometimes. I am waiting for a RAM deal to add another 512 to the 256 installed. W/256 it runs SLOW. Overall I feel I did not buy the best machine for my purposes. A D600 or the Fuji 13.3" would have been better, but I got a killer price at around $1k plus a free Dell 720 printer - (Still sitting in the box)

I use my Vaio 15" as a desktop, and the screen quality is like looking through fuzz compared to the Crystal Dell which is excellent. The keypad/mouse keys need some work. Loose and noisy. The keyboard is 3/4 size and is excellent. Tight and crisp. Or is that a lettuce?
If you have any 700 questions ask away..

I saw someone mention companies putting "bloatware" on PCS ...

well I just ordered my machine from DELL i specifically asked them to NOT install any software other than windows and drivers... they would NOT do it...they insisted they had to install the software that comes with the machine...bleh which means I;ll end up doing a format once it gets here haha

Man, this is what happens when I do not check back on the forums. I do not see much 700m here in Honolulu, but other Dell models are very much in abundance. Higher priced ones especially with heavy business types. IBMs always dominate and Apples are tolerated but more numerous than Fujis and HPs. I visit a un-official hang out where about 20 business executives take their breaks and leisurely use a DSL router - not WIFI. 20 of them at one time and NOT PAYING ONE CENT!! Secret place that we all swear not to share - yet.

AOL is really creeping me out. I used Explorer and downloaded a preview of a movie and after leaving the browser, lo and behold there is a AOL logo on my desktop!! No where was there any indications on the web page that they were present or sponsors. I quickly trashed it along with the download(withoust opening it)and ran Adware and Panda. The ghost of AOL is still in my HD somewhere. AOL is imbedded (or in bed with) Microsoft and Dell.

I love this machine! It never choked yet and any complaints were due to user error (me). Maybe I will survive in the windows world after all. I picked up a book recommended from the other forum and will eventually get the confidence to open up the c drive and eliminate the AOL spector for good.

Thanks to all for your posts.
    Sincerely,
    macmac
