and I got absolutely nowhere lol.
I'm planning on getting a vostro 1400 btw.
I couldn't even get to get him to imput vista premium on it, what have you guys been saying????? It seems like you guys make it to be something easy to ask for, and he said they can't do anything about it.
Now they have my info: phone all that stuff along w/ the quote thats the exact same price as the it is online.
I kept trying to push the fact that I don't want to spend too much but he didn't do anything to lower prices...
can anyone help me?

Call in and see if you can get another rep.

is this the number i call? where should I go in terms of calling who? -
Well, call sales and they usually redirect you to the available Rep and just chat and go from there. It may take a few tries though, most sales reps have a small working room space to give as a discount, but may not always be so giving about it.
-
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
dang. i thought it was easy seeing as how many people seemed to have gotten something out of it
-
it depends on the rep, but after a while, you don't ask them for what you want, you TELL them what you want for free, and tell him your ready to order right now, if he throws in .....x...x..x...x. . Be nice and courtious and you will get what you want. dell screwed up my order, adn i had to reorder. i was so pissed, that For the same price i got a printer, complete care warranty, and a free sleeve. know what you want for free. the easiest thing to bargain is warranty, so start by getting that, second try and get a printer. Hardware is harder to get.
good luck -
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
wow, nice advice jonny.
They already have my info though: phone, email etc. and have already sent me a qoute. does this mean I cant try to bargain again? -
You can start all over with someone else with different information. Ultimately, as someone who works in sales, you have to make them understand you will not buy something until you are satisfied. If you get a decent sales person on the phone they should be able to take care of it for a mutual benefit...

ic, so I can keep trying even if they already have my info?
ok, I just called again and i got a different csr. she said that i would have needed to add more to get a discount. she controled the conversation though, I didn't really say: I want this for free. she said that w/ my configuratino [i added a wireless card and a webcam] that I coudln't configure my vostro.
The thing is, I saw someone get a pretty good vostro 1400 w/ better specs for like 600$. how? -
Did you try the online packages? For $700 it's 1.6ghz, 2gb ram, 120gb hdd, 8400m GS.
Also, if you're looking for even cheaper, the Vostro 1000 (15.4") is Athlon X2 1.7ghz, 1gb ram, 60gb hdd, and dvd burner for $500. -
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
yea, that online package is what I was configuring. I was trying to get the price even lower w/ other additions.
I'm pretty much set on a vostro 1400 -
Hi
This is what I did to get the discount. I just placed an order (see below for more detail) and the estimated delivery date is Sep. 18. Anyway, I called two csr to bargain. Basically, I have a friend who works at Dell so I knew if I bought through my friend I could get 14% discount (so basically no tax). But I wanted to try the rep so I wouldn't have to bother my friend or hassle her if there's problem with the computer later on.
The first rep told me to go over $2000 so he can give me a discount. The configuration came up to $2049 and he came back and said that he could give me the laptop for $2000(hooray, $49 discount) When I wouldn't accept that, he went away and then came back and said he could give me 5% discount, and then changed to 10% and finally changed to 12% (final 2% is suppose to come out of his pocket). I didn't accept it because I knew I could get better deal with my friend.
Couple of days later, I tried another rep and he told me that he could give me 14% discount. Stupid me, I've told him I would think about it and then I just received the quote.
Oh I called again couple of days later and I got Canadian csr who refused to give me anything. Indian reps were a lot nicer even though I had harder time understanding them. They were more eager to make the sale and make me happy then Canadian rep.
About a week later, I called the second rep to accept the 14% discount but he told me that he changed the team and that he need to get the new approval from the new manager. He comes back and said that he could only give 12% discount. I decided to accept it (by this time, I was tired of haggling) and and do Dell's 3 month deferral plan. At this time, the config was $1989 before tax.
When I realized that Deferral Plan had to be preauthorized payment through chequing account, I refused the plan and decided to pay the full price through the credit card(so I can get rewards back). However, the rep went back to his manager and agreed to give me additional $30 which brought my price down to $1981. The rep didn't do the calculation correctly so I still need to bug the rep but still this is pretty good deal in my opinion.
so my advice is - haggle with the rep. It works. -
on a base config or even just adding like 2 items you will not get anything.. you would have to call and get a much higher system for them to budge much.. i tried and tried trust me.. i finally was able to hit it right with coupons.. but now i think i may just send both i have back and cancel.. im so torn up over this whole screen issue.. 2 REALLY BAD LCD'S has left a huge sour taste with me..
-
How about ordering the system with the price agreed upon and 3 days later calling sales and pretending to cancel the order arguing that the price is too high, would they, dell, cut the price? Did anyone try?
thanks -
everytime i threatened to cancel they simply said ok no problem.. and were ready to cancel the order at the drop of a hat..

Interestingly, when I ordered my D830, the rep couldn't seem to wait to give me discounts and freebies left and right. First he increased my warranty to 4-Year Complete Care, then 4-Year Accidental Damage, then upgraded my RAM, then gave me a processor upgrade, and then he dropped the price, and then he threw in free next day shipping.
Then again, my purchase DID come to about $2,500. -
Does anyone have any experience about the issue? -
I think it's all down to the rep and thankfully you can try a few times with different reps: I first had a women who, after after about three phone calls, only conceded 50 EUR (about 70 Dollars) and laughed when I asked for more. Then I got a guy who within a minute conceded a hard-drive upgrade (120-160GB), a reduced rate warranty, and a wireless mouse (ok, the last is not so impressive
).
Also keep in mind that often a rep's first step in bargaining is to make it seem like they don't bargain. -
Here in the UK I get through to the Indian call centre sales people. They always seem very eager to secure a sale. Never let them lead the conversation though - always make sure that they're heading to what you want.
When pricing up a vostro I had a rep drop about £75 ($150) in less then 20 seconds because I'd have to go away, think about it and talk to other suppliers -
The last time I talk to a Dell CSR was ordering a M1330 about two weeks ago. The total came to about $2049 including taxes. It was out of my price range so I said no and was about to hang up when he was like, "I'll talk to my supervisor" and gave me $100 discount and 3 year complete care. I've noticed the later you call in the week, the better the discount. I said I could get a Lenovo Thinkpad for a better price and knocked the price down some more and it kept going. It went on for another 10 minutes and got down to $1806 including taxes, 3 year complete care, a sweet discount, a printer and fingerprint reader upgrade. I didn't end up ordering (stupid me) but I've gotten better at haggling with the CSR reps.
-
is there any course I can take that helps me in dealing the CSR? each time I ask for a discount they make me feel like a bum
-
What I did was.Configure a system,to exactly to your liken online..Then for those who want deals. You must know,Talking to a rep, over the phone ,I think is a almost for sure thing...Anyway.when you call the rep.let them know you only have so much limit you can spend..And if you can, you would've bought it for the forseen price..Be curtiouse, and polite, and always thank them. And tell them how much you realy appreciate what they've done..Then say,"Still that is out your range.Let them know what you $ range is.Just dont make it a drastic diffrence. My dell rep, told me they could only give $150 off.Which I believed. But thats in dollars.I knew they can also add features on top of that 150.So I got the 3 year warrenty and NBD.What helped me out alot ,was I applied for the dell peffered account, over the phone, with my rep.So she knew exactly how much I could spend..When you have a diffrent source of payment, they dont believe you, when you tell them. This is all you have. But with the DPA.She really seen with her own eyes,my limit

Thanks for all your responses guys.
I don't think I'll be able to get a discount since I don't plan to add too much to the vostro. THe only issue though is that I've seen people w/ like 570$ vostro's that are the same configuration. how was that even possible?
I called three times and already got two quotes. is this bad?
QUESTION:
some people have said they got vista home premium for their vostro when you call. I called but they said they coudln't configure that. wtf? -
1) $25 extra credit due to price adjustment
2) 2 $53 credits
I actually got the baseline Vostro 1400 for around $510 but I decided to upgrade the HD and RAM bringing my total cost to around $570 -
You are dealing with a very low priced system, so the margins are small and sales people will not budge far. Most of the time when people save a significant ammount of money, the PC they ordered was closer to $1500 than $500.
Also the current deals on Dell's page are not as good as past deals, however I posted an evalue code in the deals forum that is better than what you can get without the code.
Also, there is no promise of getting Vista Premium on one of these. I wasted like 5 hours trying and completely failed. -
Whoops forgot the link!
Click here for a good Vostro 1400 config that is $599, then wait for a hot deal on RAM to install yourself and save money
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&kc=65023&oc=bqpcjba
Expires at midnight. -
Ah weak, I've been looking at the deal for a while, didn't realize it expired tonight at midnight. Do they often give deals for super-cheap (well below $1000) 1400 or 1420? I still haven't made it to a kiosk to find out which resolution I like on the 14" screen, and if I can stand the glossy finish or not.
-
Just kidding, are you trying to get something you don't deserve? Otherwise, all you have to do is ask for it since you did not get what you paid or bargained for. -
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
I might actually just purchase but I"m still scared of better deals in the future.
If I change the ram, is it all on the bottom?
Thanks again for the link
I would give you rep but it says i need to pass it around more so... sorry -
that is a great deal for 599$ !!! anything good on inspirons ...
-
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
I logged in, adjusted it and saved it to my cart thing. I hope it saves lol
-
it expires tonight the evalue code i mean
-
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
yea I wonder if the configuration will stay cuz I just configued three of them and 'saved it' to my account. it says it will hold for 30 days but I'm not sure if that means the deal will stay
-
no it will not when you go to check out it will tell you ite no longer available i tried that last time
-
that means the config will stay the same...if u read the fine text which is usually most important..."prices and discounts can be changed without notice"
if you want it buy it tonight
there will be new coupons after these but you cant guarantee they will be this much -
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
I really want to get vista premium and I heard you should talk to a csr while you do that to ask, I don't want to buy that separately...
It really is a good deal, but I think it''ll come up later -
the new coupons are up they are the same guys 325$ off 1299 and up
-
dell sells so much that they get tangled in themselves ...dont worry there will always be GREAT deals from dell.
for that premium thing i guess it just depends on you getting a rep who is willing to give it to ya ...
good luck on your search -
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
thanks mordeth, I think i'll sit this deal out.
yea, I hope I can get it, thanks again -
just fyi the resolution specialist i spoke with today told me prices will be creeping up slowly for a while.. not sure if i should believe him or not but that came from him ..
-
WorkinProgress Notebook Evangelist
thanks for the update. I hope that creeping isn't too bad
-
yeah he didnt say numbers but he said the cost of a lot of the items is actually rising some again and they will re-price accordingly..though if you are looking for a basic system like the one posted earlier you are not going to find them any cheaper than that man.. they are not gonna go down for some time but maybe a few dollars possibly nothing to be concerned about... if you were configuring a much more expensive system them maybe..if you plan on buying i would grab one
-
i doubt they will rise by alot if any... the only reason to raise price would be to lower order numbers, and no-one in their right mind would do that. for the time being they just keep delaying some colourfully customized ones so they can get rid of the easy ones.
-
what he was saying is the cost of certain lcd's and other things is rising some again and dell will reprice to go with this if need be..
-
ahh ... well, we will just have to wait and see...and that is what we are doing
Just tried bargaining w/ csr - DEAD - DEAD
