Firstly my apologies that my first post is a request for help.

I spilt a small quantity of wine on my dell inspiron 1720 laptop, confined to the keboard only. I immediately turned the laptop upside down and removed the keyboard. There was no evidence of liquid under or around it.

Anyway I bought a used keyboard that came with the mousepad etc, the whole top plate of the laptop.

So I swopped the keyboards first. Powered up ok. But then the touchpad was working in reverse and none of the keys were working. So I replaced the entire top of the laptop using the keyboard and touchpad I bought. The mouse is moving 100% now and the keyboard is working APART from 'B' 'N' and 'Space' buttons. I'm typing this on an external USB keyboard which is working 100% though. When I try to type on the laptop keyboard it suddenly switches to 'foreign' mode and types letters with French, German, etc symbols above them. On top of that the keys also open the menus at the top, and the mouse pad buttons don't work properly either when it switches to this mode.

Is it possible that the 1720 keyboard etc that I bought is from an older laptop and therefore not compatible? There are a couple of minor cosmetic differences e.g. rubber cover on buttons above function keys are white, mine were black, but all connections etc are the same, top is identical.

Maybe I need to update the drivers?

OR has the wine caused more damage than I thought and something else is wrong.

OR have I got a broken keyboard, I bought it used but supposed to be fully working.

    Many thanks guy
    Adam

I don't think that the wine has caused more damage than what it did to your keyboard. I've spilled drinks on my keyboard lots of times, and I've just had to clean them or replace them. It's more likely that the old keyboard/parts you bought are bad/not compatible.

You might want to show us a picture of your 1720's keyboard, and where you bought it from. Do remember that the 1720 has different keyboard designs based on region. The US versions are the general standard.

Thanks! I did assume I was getting a UK one as I bought it from a UK based company. The key board I have says NSK800 on the back whereas the one I bought does have a different model number. I think you are right in that the keyboard is not compatible.

I spoke to the supplier and they have agreed to exchange it for me.

Will keep you updated on the situation

Thanks for taking time to reply

The suppliers are sending me out another one to try out. Hopefully it was just a faulty one.

Thanks, will update if I get sorted

I received a replacement keyboard today. This one is exactly the same as the original one that I spilt wine over. It does not work either and does exactly the same thing as the previous replacement.

Upon inserting the new keyboard and firing up, the touchpad works in reverse. Most of the keys do not work either, and only the 'up' cursor works.

Is this some sort of sortware issue or has the wine corrupted some circuits inside it?

It is less than 1 year old, no accidental damage with dell, but it is covered by my house insurance. Unless anyone has any ideas I'll send it off for a repair through the insurance!

Hope someone can shed light on this peculiar problem

    Thanks
