I got the Anti-glare, widescreen 15.4 inch display (1280x800) on my Inspiron 1520, ordered it a few days ago and wondered if anyone got this. I am thinking about changing my order to the High Resolution, glossy widescreen 15.4 inch display (1440x900) for $50 more. Except, I really don't like the reflections I might get. I am a gamer, so I would like your opinion on what I got and if i should get the upgrade.

    Thanks!

I've got an XPS m1330 which only comes with the glossy "TrueLife" screen. I've also been using an XPS m1210 for the last 8 months which also has the glossy screen.

I can't really say I've been annoyed too much by it. Granted it does provide more of a reflection of what's around you, but it's never interfered with viewing the screen (for me).

It's honestly personal preference. You should see the displays in person before you decide.

The higher resolution screen is a def. bonus (for some users at least) and while glossy screens do offer a more vibrant color with higher saturation, you may encounter glare issues. I have had both types of screen and prefer the matte display; however, I was not troubled by glare. If you won't be working in direct light or in highly reflective (overhead lights, outside, etc) environments you'd probably be fine with a glossy display.

the WXGA (1280x800) screen (glossy or anti-glare) in the Inspiron 1520 and vostro 1500 suffers from extremely bad vertical viewing angles.. so much that many people complain that unless they are several feet from the screen they cant see the entire screen at the same brightness, either the top or bottom will be "blanched" or faded.

Only the 1280x800 screens suffer from this. The XGA+ and SXGA+ screens are much much better in this regard. The WSXGA+ screen for instance has fully twice the viewing angle of the WXGA.

If you look here you can see the numbers for each screen type/size for the inspiron/vostros:

    http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/l...en_inspn_nb?c=uk&l=en&s=bsd&~lt=popup&ref=CFG

    Click "Compare side-by-side"

    Resolution 1680 x 1050 1440x900 1280x800 1280x800

    Horizontal Viewing Angle
    WSXGA+ +60/-60
    WXGA+ +40/-40
    WXGA +40/-40

    Vertical Viewing Angle
    WSXGA+ +40/-50
    WXGA+ +30/-30
    WXGA +15/-30 <-----

The WXGA (1280x800) screen is crippled in this way, in my opinion. If either of the lines going from from the top or bottom of your screen to your eyes is greater than just 15 degrees from level, then there will be some blanching/fading of the image. Some people have reported that watching videos is terrible on these screens because of that. Even the WXGA+ is much much better than the WXGA in this area.

Maybe it varies between manufacturer though, I dont know. With such a tiny viewing angle though, I wouldnt get the WXGA in an inspiron or vostro.

Yeah but most of the graininess complaints seem to be with the higher-res screens.

my antiglare on my vostro 1500 is beastly, no graininess whatsoever! only problem is; it does lack in color compared to my desktop e207wfp monitor.
