I finally got my exchange and the new notebook finally seems to be everything I was expecting (by the way, I have had an excellent experience with Dell customer service and technical support, except for the fact that I needed an exchange to begin with). The only thing I am questioning right now is a knocking sound that I hear. It happens typically when I have let the notebook sit for a bit but I'm not sure if there is any discernable pattern (assuming it's the hard drive, but I don't know that). It will seem like it is happening every few minutes, and other times I really don't hear it for awhile. I am not having any functionality problems. I don't see alot of discussion about this type of thing, so I thought I would put this out there and see if this is nothing, or if there is something I should check or be concerned about. Thanks.
(I have the WD Scorpio 40GB drive which apparently has the Durastep Ramp head locking technology, maybe that's making the knocking sound?)

What you have is a hard drive clicking noise, I believe is made when the hard drive heads park. Both my 700m and 9300 do it. you can download a program from dell, usually where you update your drivers for your computer from Dell that will make it sound less, at the expense of performance of the drive. I too first thought it was my notebook just about to go pop, but it is something all dell notebooks I believe seem to do. That said my Acer used to do it as well.
I live with it, and think when I hear it as a good sign my hard drive is still ticking along.
