For the first time I tried to use a blank dvd but my computer doesn't seem to recognize em. I've tried HP and Verbatim DVD-Rs (haven't tried +R but the drive shows that it can read them as well). I think I remember hearing about issues with this dvd drive from Sony.

If anyone could help me out here it would be much appreciated.

Yup, the Sony is the lemon dvd drive. I've had some problems with mine too. Sometimes it reads discs, and sometimes it doesn't. And you know how it is supposed to burn at 8x. Well, all mine burns at is 4x or 4.5x. I really don't care for it, but what you could do is update the firmware in the dvd drive. ( http://support.dell.com/support/dow...&typecnt=1&vercnt=1&formatcnt=1&fileid=134618) This is the firmware update for the Sony drive. Hope this helps.
