I'd lilke to purchase a 17in monitor for my Dell 1420.
Also do i need to check video card etc. to work with an external monitor.
Do any of you use an external monitor for home use and which one
would you suggest i go for?
    Thanks for any help.

If your laptop has a VGA plug on the side, you can just get any LCD monitor that has VGA (aka DSUB) input on it. If your 1420 has HDMI, you'll need an LCD with an HDMI (or DVI, you can use an adapter cable).

I am sure it's not plug and play after connecting. What measures do i need
    to take to switch screens?
    Thank you.

Windows 7 is plug and play. However, if you're not using W7, or if it doesn't detect the monitor for whatever reason, you'll simply open your video card driver's control panel, click on Displays, and click the button to detect displays, and it should detect and enable the extra monitor.

But it should work automatically, especially if you have HDMI or DVI on the laptop.
