more and more recently ( ie past 3 restarts) I cannot control my brightness, when I use Fn + ^ the little sun meter thing comes up I can take it to the top but the screen does not get brighter, when I try again it's back at the bottom and the brightness never changes.

I just updated quickset but this hasn't helped.

    any ideas?

    TIA

ok restarted again and I've also noticed that it only happens when on battery power, so I'm thinking it's some Vista setting, does anyone know where it is?

ok lol, when on battery power I can adjust the brightness but only slightly, it seems to be limited from going to full brightness.

It is built-in to your battery app. Just go in and see if you can change the option. I have dealt with a couple laptops that have a user/manufacturer imposed limitation.

    simonjf2006:

You may want to check your LCD setting from within the system setup. Restart your computer and when you see the Dell splash screen, start tapping the F2 key.

In System Setup, there is a setting for LCD brightness on battery. Change the setting to something higher if need be.
