    Hello all first post...

Got a Inspiron 6400 a couple of weeks ago and was very pleased with it but have now received a replacement. However, the panel on the second is nowhere near as bright as that on the first.

They are both the 1440x900wxga+ truelife screen but, whereas the first was very bright, clear and has good viewing angles, the second has a grainy like appearance and is nowhere near as bright. It also suffers from lower viewing angles.

I assume, like many builders, that Dell use panels from more than one manufacturer but is there any way to identify the panel short of opening the case. Couldn't see any reference in the BIOS or online.

Anyone know what panels they use, particularly the 15.4" 1440x900 screen?

    Thanks...

go to control panel, performance and maintenance , system , hardware , device manager , monitors -> properties -> details : and than copy what you see there ( it should be DISPLAY\***) than i can tell you what brand is it.

OS is Vista - it's installed as a generic PnP but under the property dropdown for "Hardware Ids" it gives monitor\CMO1538

    Is this it?

    Thanks for that.

Possibly the c1 or c4 type then going by the viewing angles and brightness. The second unit they sent may have been a c3 or c5 from the angles given and lower bightness.
