Hey all. New psoter. Very useful site you have here. Could someone tell me the difference between XGA+ screens or UXGA with Truelife?
What is better for what applications? I'm trying to configure my system but keep my cost down and if I can save on the screen I would like to.![]()
Thank you.

Basically it comes down to how sharp things will look to you. I suggest that you goto a local computer store, such as Compusa or Best Buy and look at the laptops. Notice the display descriptions.
To answer directly, the UXGA will be a sharper image through having a higher native resolution than that of the XGA+
I hope this helps. I think you will get the best answer from seeing yourself at a computer store. -

I got the WXGA+ screen (17 in Widescreen) (1440x900) I prefer this because the video card can handle gaming at native resolution.
But it is a personal preference. -
So if I wanna game at native resolutuins then the "lesser" wxga would be the way to go?
This laptop is going to replace my 4 year old 8100. Its not exactly meant as a desktop replacement, but I want to last. The most I will be playing on is World of Warcraft and using Maya occationally for school.
I have a gorgeous new Dell 19 inch LCD on my desktop. If I need a super nice screen, I always have that to use.
My friend works at Dell so I am getting a really good deal, but I am still under budget so if I can cut corners on things like the screen, I want to. -
If anyone is curious, here is the system I plan on:

Well if you play WoW. I play at 1440x900 resolution with all effects on and 4x multisampling and AA and get 60 FPS. It is really nice.
-
Well you do have the better video card though.
I plan to get the 6800 later though off ebay or something.

How hard is it gonna be to find a NEW Geforce Go without buying it from Dell?
My I9300 can hold a Geforce 6800 Go, 6800 Ultra and a 7800 but the 3rd would void the warranty right?
Where could one find a 6800 U for the 9300? -
USAFdude02 NBR Reviewer & Deity NBR Reviewer
I believe the clock speeds are the only difference from the 6800 Go vs the 6800U. I think that it might be DDR3 too. I don't think you could go wrong with the 6800Go. It was designed for the I9300 so I still think that is your safest bet.
If you are looking for the 6800U try Ebay.
Go with the 6800Go -
Yeah I was just looking and I think I'm going to end up getting the Go 6800. I HOPE the X300 will do for at least awhile. I was just looking online and found it's like the LOWEST Rung of ATI's mobile cards. Yikes! I didn't know it was so standard. I'm sure it will do though.
I can build Desktops like nothing but I have never taken a laptop apart. I hope I can handle it if/when I upgrade the video card. This laptop is being bought with my left over school loan money. I also planned to upgrade my desktop to a 6800 video card as my FX 5700 is dying I think. Now it looks like I may be getting TWO video cards.
I will give the x300 a decent shot. All it has to do is run WoW well. I imagine my 2 Gigs of ram will help. -

The x300 should suffice for now. When you upgrade your card, here is the service manual. It will help show you how to do it and what you have to take off to get at the card.

I think I have posted this before, but just in case I posted it again.
The 2GB of RAM will help alot, on other games WoW isn't too bad on memory though. It will help out on first-person shooters when the levels are really big.
Hope this helps. -
What is the x300 equivalent to in Nvidia terms?
WoW is pretty much the ONLY game I play so if it will run fine, that's good. My laptop is mostly gonna be for general use. My current 8100 has always been my internet/lookup/school/office type computer. It's my more "personal" computer if that makes any sense. With the new one I will probably use Maya a bit. (3d animation major) but since what I do is not too complex yet, I am sure the computer can handle it.
Just wanted to clarify something. If I get the Geforce 6800 Go (standard) it will NOT void my warranty correct? -
USAFdude02 NBR Reviewer & Deity NBR Reviewer
X300 is really low compared to the 6800Go. Chazman will be able to answer this for you. He is good at that.
If you upgrade your card to the 6800Go it will not be covered by your warranty. If you have to send it in for service, just put the old card back in. Easy as that.
As for not needing it yet...I would still get it if you plan on doing more advanced graphics. Never hurts to be ahead of the game. -
I think I read that the x300 is like a Gefoce 6200. That's what I meant by equviellent. is that right though? If so then the x300 is better than my desktop card (FX 5700) and it runs WoW flawlessly.
Just put the old card back in? What a pain in the butt. But at least it will be a way to "use" my warranty.
Oh and I am for sure getting the 6800. Just a matter of right away or waiting a bit. I wanna get a good deal and find one as new as possible. Is ebay gonna be about my only option? Anything under $200 would be good for me. -
USAFdude02 NBR Reviewer & Deity NBR Reviewer
Well what resolution do you run on your desktop. I run WoW at 1440x900 resolution with all effects turned up and I don't drop below 55FPS. Which is really nice and fluid while playing.
-
1280 x 1024. The native of my 1905FP I got for Xmas. Freakin' Gorgeous Monitor.
I dont get anywhere near 60, more like 30s but I like that just fine. It looks smooth, that's all that matters.
-
if i upgraded my 6800go to an ultra would it void my warranty (since the ultra wasn't designed for the i9300) ?
-
*Goes out on a limb*
Yes it would.

Zeonstar,
Here is the chart that Chazman posted.
ATI:Nvidia
X300 = Go6200
X600 = Go6400
X700 = Go6600
X800 = Go6800
X800XT = Go6800Ultra
New cards:
X1300 = Go7300
X1400 = Go7300
X1600 = Go7600
? = Go7800/GTX [no ATI competitor at the moment]
And then performance [lowend>highend]:
X300 = Go6200 > Go6400 = X600 > Go6600 > X700 > Go6800=X800 > Go6800Ultra=X800XT [should be close to Go7800] Go7800 [just a bit faster than Go6800U/X800XT, howver, haven't seen any benchmarks so cannot be completely sure] > Go7800GTX
Thanks to Chaz.
Jordansport,
Yes that would void the warranty. Cause the card was not meant for the I9300. -
Thank you for that info USA.
Well hey my x300 is at least like a 6000 series video card. That will do for now. Like I said above my desktop only has a FX 5700 (though with 256 RAM though).
Still maybe I wont need to order the new video card the same day I get the Laptop. I can do it the next day... Haha.
Sorry to repeat myself but about the 6800 Go, Ebay is gonna be my only option right? -
USAFdude02 NBR Reviewer & Deity NBR Reviewer
No, you can order from Dell Spare parts...but they are usually alot more expensive.
-
Well yeah I know that but not for thier prices! :-0
Thanks for the info today. Waiting for laptop sucks.

I will agree with you there. But anticipation is half the fun...especially if it comes when you aren't expecting it.
Have fun! -
Hard for it to come and surprise me when I check the status link every 15 minutes and the thing isn't even past the credit card auth yet.
