Thx for the pics. Exactly what I wanted for confirmation.

I'm about to order my M1530. Is it better to try and talk to DELL until they confirm they'll get me the LG or should I just buy it and replace it later or sth?

Thing is, I just finished chatting with DELL and they said the LG was out of stock. I'll try calling them tomorrow and I'll report how it goes.

Honestly, it just seems like sort of a crap shoot. From everything I've read here, it sounds like it all depends on who you talk to and your mileage may vary. I would take anything they tell you about it being "out of stock" with a grain of salt and try again with a different CSR. Some people have reported that the tech is very friendly and receptive to one's mention of the specific part number (some even SUGGESTING it), while others have even gotten mad about it or said that it's impossible to replace with anything other than the same make/model.

What gives, Dell? I know they've got a huge customer service base, but it seems as though they would have at least some sort of unified answer at this point. I'll be receiving my M1530 on Tuesday, and I've already confirmed it has the Samsung screen. I'm going to give it the benefit of the doubt, but if it seems as though I'm getting shorted here, then I'll be on the phone with whoever it takes to get it corrected. Dell's business support is second to none, so there's no reason why their consumer line has to suffer like this.

Was this on a new order or on a warranty replacement?

Just let you know I was promised just like you and they were very nice. That doesn't mean anything. I hope you get LG. your chances are much better with WXGA+ but it will be just luck . not because tech support promised you.

How do I add my systems to my account on the DELL website? I've read about this somewhere on this forum but I couldn't find it anymore.

you enter the service tag number in your account where is says, choose your Default System .. or somthing like that, I can rememeber now, because now it says Change My Default System since I have already done that.
You can figure it out if you look closely.

Well I think I found it, but I don't have a service tag. I remember reading that you can add the systems before u get your computer tho. Am I wrong?

Sorry for being such a n00b. lol

I've checked around a bit for this answer, but I can't seem to come up with anything. I've recently ordered the XPS M1530 with 1280x800 resolution screen. Could I potentially end up with one of these grainy Samsungs? (never mind the low res..)

I wasn't sure if it only (potentially) effected the higher res. Thanks.

Edit: Well according to another poster, I apparently can and likely will get the grainy Samsung. :(

I believe it has to have shipped before you can add it. I've tried it several different ways and it just tells me it's not a valid order, etc. Mine's still in boxing. As soon as it hits Shipped (please lord) I'll check again.

    I have an XPS m1530

I unfortunately got a Samsung screen

the resolution is 1280 by 800.

I want to exchange it for an equivalent LG screen as I hear they are better.

Could someone please tell me what exactly I need to SAY to Dell on the phone?

Also, if I have paid for two year free in house tech support, do I need to pay for this new screen?

Go and check your Service Tag in the Warranty Info section of the Dell Support page. It will list the part no of the screen and all your other components together with a description. At least with the Samsung 1280 x 800 this seems to be the only way to be sure without opening the laptop up.

That is the last thing you want to be saying to Dell. Just because you got a Samsung does not mean you got a bad one, you need a better reason.

That's a million dollar question, when you have the answer let us all know :)

Not if it's a warranty replacement.

Heres some pics I took of both the Samsung and LG WXGA (1280 x 800) before I sent the LG one back. The ones of each monitor on it's own were taken without any flash. I only have a white background shot of the Samsung one sorry. Is it just me but is the Samsung markedly different? Something I can't reproduce well is the ripple effect in the screen coating, you need just the right light and angles and the lens just doesn't capture it well.

The 1st photo from the left is the LG, 2nd is the Samsung on white background, 3rd is the Samsung on coloured background, 4th is both side by side with the Samsung on the left of the shot.

Not sure if it's the angle of the picture, but that's how my samsung looked (second picture). It was always dark on the right. Your comparison picture does show that the samsung is darker than the LG as others have said.

My 1680x1050 samsung also was dark on the right.

I just had my screen replaced today with an LG. It is much clearer and brighter. The white areas look smoother. But there is a bit of a green push though. Looks fine, but its definitely there. The samsung had a bit of a blue push.

Also, is there anything I need to do now with a new monitor? Reinstall the video card drivers? Is there a monitor profile in Windows Vista I need to change?

When I called, all I said was that i was unhappy with the brightness and image quality of my samsung, and had read that dell had shipped some systems with LG that were much better. For the money I paid for the system, I should be stuck with a second-rate screen and want to swap.

That was about all it took, but my tech was really receptive and helpful

It depends heavily on what person you get to talk to. Once I called and said my screen looks grainy and dull and the person said all LCDs look like that. Then I said it's also dark on the right side. He then said "Oh, that's something I can work with" and proceeded to look for a replacement.

I think they are trained to try to turn away 'minute' issues that may be due to personal preference.

That's the impression I was left with also. Still waiting for Tech Support to call me back to arrange a swap but they have the evidence there to show I'm not just making it up.

OK, got the panel replaced with the LG WXGA LPL0301 today, yay! Haven't had much time to test it all out but it's way better than the same model panel in my 1st (returned) XPS M1530 had and much brighter and cleaner than the Samsung it replaced. Some pics attached of the panel labels, a bit grainy sorry as I only had the phone camera at work.
