$1,250 is real cash, besides I will be looking at this thing EVERYDAY for the next 5 years. Past 3 Laptops, I never even thought twice about the display.

Shame on Dell for putting loyal customers in this situation.

I went to a Dell Store yesterday, and saw the E1505 and the E1705 LCDs, they only had the Glossy ones and no E1405s at all.

First look, I thought, hey that looks pretty good. But when we opened Media Player and 2/3rds of the screen was black, BOOM !

In one second, this review popped into my head ... http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2950&review=Dell+Inspiron+e1405

"Yes, the screen is a tad shiny, and if you set your Windows desktop to black, you can use the LCD to help you comb your hair, floss, brush your teeth or put on makeup"

I'm not going to set the notebook up outside permanently, but I kind have been sold repeatedly on the thought of 'laptop' , 'wireless' , 'mobile'. That would mean this laptop will probably see MORE natural daylight, NOT less.

Sorry to vent here, I like Dell, I think they hit a home run with the 1405, 1505, 1705, with the exception of the Display.

I hate to have to learn to 'live' with something, before I even open the box, but I have a feeling that will be the case.

Okay so Dell sent the right screen and it got installed today. Sadly its a Samsung, which I've heard people say isnt as clear and is true by looking at the screen. I dunno how to explain the difference between the Samsung and LG, Samsung is more blotchy? Different kind of streaking from the LG, less noticable.

I'm going to keep it though. My main problem was the bad viewing angles and the new Samsung is a lot better in that department. I'm just sick of Dell and dealing with them. I figure Dell sells tons of comps and I'm just being too picky.

Regarding the Dell Latitude D620, I had the LG which had bad light leakage and it was limited in the viewing angle to watch a movie. After getting my current configuration, I had them side by side and my screen is 3 orders brighter, sharper and minimal light leakage. Now it may be the combination of Nvidia + my Samsung screen (Samsung SEC4457).

Just got my e1505 this past monday. Not really happy with my lcd. Found out I have a Samsung. It seems like its not that bright. Is there a big different between having a LG or Samsung? Are LG's lcd much brighter then Samsung. Dont know if its worth it to try to exchange his laptop and hope to get a LG lcd.

Help: Dell replaced a Inspiron 6000 under a warranty, and only after 1 year of putting me through hell in Manilla. The new machine is a 6400, and was to meet or exceed my I-6000. It must, b/c the list price is 2X what I paid for the I-6000. I am trying to determine exactly what I got. The screen (I paid for the best screen on the I-6000) is listed on invoice and packing slip as: 1 PF881 Module,Liquid Crystal Display 15.4WS+,SMSN,Glare Wide Viewing Angle,6400 $450.3470. It has shiny finish and seems very, very good to me. Nevertheless, I gots to know! Especially if I have any more problems. Can someone help?

you need to look at the hardware_ID of the screen in Control Panel to confirm what make your display is.

i've "Samsung" on the shipping label, but it's really a SHARP (thank god!). also, it says i have an NEC dvd-drive, but it's really a SONY. (i actually got sick of not being able to calibrate my first Samsung display to any suitable degree to match my other monitors, and so sent it back -- seems they used the same shipping description, even though the parts are different.)

the Samsung wasn't bright at all; the SHARP is maybe too bright in comparison, but it's easy to tone that down rather than try and pretend with the Samsung.

the ONE REALLY GOOD thing that Samsung makes for these notebooks are their Spinpoint HDDs. my first 9400 had one, and it was totally silent. if the HDD light didn't come on, you'd never know it was working. i've got a Hitachi now, and although it's still very quiet, it's nothing like the Samsung.

Yeah the Samsung HDD is extremely quiet. The only noise I hear when my laptop is on is the fan.

I also have a Samsung screen and was pretty satisfied with it until I did some research and comparisons on it lol. The viewing angles seems acceptable. Not much light leakage except on dark screensaver or screens (my brother's crappy desktop lcd monitor has more light leakage! an Acer).

The main problem that I notice now is the colour and a grainy effect. When I put the laptop lcd and desktop lcd side by side and set the wallpaper to specific colours (red, green and blue), the desktop lcd colour is more rich and vibrant and more solid. The laptop's samsung is a bit darker and has a more grainy feel. Also watched a random episode of naruto on both screens and there was a lot of green in it (ep 50, lee vs garaa) and lee's green jumpsuit looked much better on the acer than my laptop. (more vibrant and ligher green)

I also wanted to test whether the small ammount of light leakage at the bottom of the screen would bother me but since the laptop's a widescreen, those vertical black bars have always been at the left and right for me. :(

BTW, I read a lot of notebook reviews that use this picture:
    http://www.notebookreview.com/assets/12384.jpg
Does anyone know where I can find it or is it from a program?

Just wanted to see how good/bad that picture would look on my laptop.
I took some pictures of both my desktop and laptop screens while they both ran the same wallpaper, and anime episode but they're at home right now so I might post them up if somebody wants to see them.

    Thanks

I'm not 100% sure so don't quote me on this but I believe:

Light Leakage is when parts of your screen show up more bright than other parts and is not uniform. You can see it most clearly when you look at a black screensaver or wallpaper in a dark room. If you see some light spilling out of the darkness, that's the light leaking out.

Dead Pixel: I believe its when a pixel dies and will never change colours. Not too sure whether it stays black or some odd colour. There's an industry accepted ammount of dead pixels. 4 or 5? not sure. But usually if you only have one dead pixel, it likely wouldn't be replaced.

Only switched to an LCD recently so I don't know much except for what I read from these forums.

same story here, i noticed the same thing you did. except instead of anime i was running design work.

i have yet to see a notebook display that matches a high-quality desktop LCD -- the best thing you can do is tweak and tweak and tweak with the nvidia controls until you get your colour depth and gammas right. any mission critical colour work should NOT be done on this notebook, IMO. there's no way i'd risk that except in a last resort. (and so, i run my desktop LCD off the notebook when i'm not mobile.)

the Sharp is better, but the Samsung was BRUTAL when it came to this. i couldn't tweak it for #$%^.

Yeah I didn't like using Nvidia's tweaking thing so when I got home, I installed photoshop and used Adobe Gamma to set the green brighter.

Here's two pictures of before and after I adjusted the green levels on Adobe Gamma.

Edit: The left is my 9400, the right is a cheap acer monitor I 'borrowed' from my brother. Just used it for comparison. Used MS Paint to shrink each picture by 50%, otherwise they would each about about 1.5mb~.

    The anime one is before.

    The flowers picture is after.

whoa! i see what you mean about the green! really desaturated/missing from the anime shot.

curious about what your settings are on the nVidia tool -- "default"? and you did all that in Adobe Gamma?

and that's on a Samsung screen?

Yeah I didnt know how to mess around with the nvidia settings, too complex haha.

Yeah my order (when I check dell website) says it is indeed a Samsung and I fixed the green using adobe gamma.

Though I'm no longer 100% sure whether it is a Samsung. I recall checking it out the first time I got it in device manager. But now I can't seem to find it again and maybe I just confused it with my samsung hdd.

It says DISPLAY\LPL0000 <-- LG right?

I SWEAR! Ninjas replaced my lcd when I was at work. I could of sworn I saw Samsung under monitors when I checked it out the first day... maybe I mistook it for my samsung HD.

I guess if my lappy LCD is really an LG, that would explain why I saw LG 'symptoms' (the sparkle effect, some subtitles in an anime I watched sparkled, I thought I was crazy) and the two dark corners.

    LG is better..

Btw, I just did a comparison between my Z84J and Toshiba. They both equip with LG screen.. and the result is the Toshiba one win.

Toshiba's screen is as bright as sony's..

Is the same LG LCD model installed on Dell 6400 , Toshiba A130/A135 and Asus z84j?

I agreed that the Toshiba A135 is very good and very close to Sony FE xbrite eco...

I wonder why the same panel and Toshiba is brighter...
