Has anyone noticed how the installation cds or dvds rattle the drive in their Dell laptops? I'd forgotten how loud this was until I recently reinstalled after a reformat. The drive just howls. The exact same thing happened with my Inspiron 8600, also only when installing programs. It never happens when watching a movie or burning a cd or dvd or any other application, just when installing software. Same thing on both laptops. Just curious if anyone else had ever noticed this or if any of you gurus has an explanation...

Yea, this probably has to do with the constant reading that is going on. I also had this problem on my 700m and XPS M140...and both of the optical drives were made by Sony. You might be able to request a drive made by someone else.

I'm willing to bet yours is Sony made as well...and I'm also going to hazzard a guess that Sony drives are the problem here.
