I think that hearing a loud spin up is quite normal. If your drive continually makes the loud noise, you might consider slowing it down with a third-party program.

I would suggest finding out the manufacturer of the drive and posting a thread in the Hardware forum.

    Hi,

I'm using a 9400 with a drive from NEC and at high speeds, it also gets pretty loud. Depends on how fast it spins for the current task. I think, it's normal.

I also noticed it is a bit louder with some CDs/DVDs than with others. Maybe that these have a slight unbalance, as i can also feel very slight vibrations when i touch the Notebook in the area of the drive. At high RPM, even milligramms of unbalance can get noticeable.

its natural, esspecially if you have not modified the drive settings. the default spindown time for my drive is 2 minutes, in which it might seem like the disc is spinning at the maximum speed the whole time "while" installing. in a matter of fact, it is only keeping the drive at that speed to make access to the drive faster when it is needed (but most of the time most of the information that is needed is gathered in the first dozen seconds.

    donno if that makes sense...lol

I have the same problem with my 1705 ( i think). The actual drive isnt too loud, but what the sound really is is the plastic molding at the end of the tray vibrating against the case. If you put your finger over the drive door it'll stop sometimes. when im running a cd, i usually fold a piece of paper over a few times, and stick it in the crack of the tray, and it keeps quiet.
