When I plug my external hard drive into my Dell Vostro laptop, the mouse starts to lag and sometimes doesn't move at all, but when I disconnect the external hard drive, the mouse is fine.

Anyone know how to fix this?

No, it's the one that is built into the laptop.

    Hi,

Ok you mean the touchpad. Are you Windows XP or Windows Vista?

I've tried a USB mouse to see if it was a problem with the touchpad but I'm still getting the same problem.

    Anyone know why?

I use USB HD a lot but I did not notice such problem in my Vostro 1400. Have you tried plugging the HD into different USB ports?

I have this problem WITHOUT a usb hdd. The touchpad is pretty worthless soemtimes. Maybe setting the touchpad process to a higher priority would help?

Sometimes when I plug in my external harddrive into my desktop it lags as well. For me though, the reason is that it's processing all the information in the HD and the computer itself is lagging. First make sure you are running your processor at 100%, it's possible that even at AC power the processor is not at 100%. (Go to power management). Then, wait a while after the processor briefly scans the external harddrive, then see if it still works.
