I have a Dell Latitude D520, and today the speaker started making a very strange noise. It was static at first, and sometimes changes to a high pitched squeal. Pressure applied to the palm rest area above the speaker sometimes seems to stop the noise.

The noise happened after the laptop had been left on overnight, I turned the laptop off for about 2 hours, started it back up and the issue reoccured.

The volume was muted the entire time.

    Any ideas?

Are you sure that it is the speaker without a doubt?

It could also be the exhaust fan and just sound like it is coming through where the speaker is located. The pressure applied to the palm rest could be putting pressure on the fan to slow it down and stop the sound. Just check that because I have heard a fan make a static type sound and also a high pitched squeal.

If its not that then I would suspect an audio card issue. Or at the absolute worst it could be a motherboard issue.

No matter what the problem is, it sounds like a hardware issue. If your computer is still under warranty, use it while you have it! And if you are not sure place some calls and find out.
