I am trying to loose my spare laptop to connect it to tv. I really doubt this would be possible but is there any way to connect the laptop to tv and have the screen close?

If your TV has VGA in, you'll be able to hook it up directly. It will be recognized as an external monitor, so closing the LCD won't do anything (as long as it's not setup to standby on lid close).
