    Hello,

I have an Inspiron 1420. I've noticed this has happened 2 or 3 times, but hasnt happened recently and was curious about the cause. The laptop would restart (I'm not sure if it did it after a blue screen) but it would prompt the windows menu asking if I would like to restart in Safe Mode, and all those other choices, or restart normally. I usually choose Normal restart and then it just keeps restarting over and over until I force it to shut down by holding down on the power key for several seconds. I was wondering if this is a Vista problem. I noticed this occurred after a fresh install of Vista without the Dell bloatware and even after all the Dell updates had been put on.

Something similar happened to my parents Desktop (Inspiron 530 Core2Quad). It has never been hooked up to the internet so I doubt it was a virus. But I was watching 2 different movies on it, and it just restarted on its own--once during each movie. I doubt it was a power failure b/c my parents old Athlon XP desktop was next to it and it didn't restart. I am thinking a faulty power supply or problems with Windows Media Center. I'm worried because it sounds so harsh when it happens, like the electricity had gone off in the house but it wasnt that at all. Does anyone know what possibly could be the problem for a brand new desktop to be restarting so abruptly?

This could be caused by just about anything. Hardware, software, maybe both. Call support, they'll have you look up the info they need to trouble-shoot.

Interesting thread. They think the culprit is update KB937287, which is supposed to be a "prerequisite" to installing SP1.
