I just ordered my fist laptop ever from Dell (Vostro 1400.. woohoo!) for school purposes. But now I realize Im going to be faced with a dilemma. I will be bringing my laptop for study purposes to the campus library etc.

Usually when I have to take a piss or want something to eat I just walk off and do it. But, with my new baby, what am I supposed to do? Whats standard protocal ?:GEEK:

If there is someone around that either works in the library that has a desk near you or someone you know near by and ask them to keep an eye on it until you return...otherwise take it with you! I go to a small community college and have often left it sitting somewhere without worrying.

Don't keep it on campus... we were shown a security video of where a bunch of guys just left their laptops to go to a food cart, all of them stolen within seconds.

Get a laptop bookbag, keep it on you with the laptop. Anywhere you need to go, put the laptop in the bag and just bring it with you. Use the toilet to take a piss; they have hangers and you can just keep your bag on it (if it's light enough). I wouldn't leave it on the floor because there's a chance someone might swipe it.

And you guys seem to be really trusting... do you go to small colleges or something? I'm heading to Drexel and I don't plan on leaving it anywhere.

I say get a bag and bring it with you, its fine if you leave it on the floor (if you have a water-proof bag) If someone takes it pull up your pants and get ready to fight ;) ;) ;)

You really can't think that is safe... Some other student could steal it. I'm going to college in Newark, NJ... Could you imagine how smart that would be? It's pretty bad when they have a 63 member police force for a 2 square block area, and the cops give you a speech about how you shouldn't leave ANYTHING in the open if you want it to be there when you come back..

    Anyone can walk onto campus.

Or you could wear diapers...

I always just ask whoever I'm sitting beside to watch it for me. Students do this all the time at Waterloo. You don't have to know the person to know they're not going to steal it. I've been doing it for 4 years and haven't had any of my laptops stolen yet.

I would definitely not leave it out in the open...ever!

Though, yeah, I go to one of the largest schools in the country, so we aren't as trusting around here. The first day my freshman year I had my phone & wallet stolen in one of the dining halls...I learned that lesson quickly. So, another vote for: just take it with you!

in my campus library, there were people that did use locks to attach it to the library desk legs. however, not many people did that. most people would study in a group they knew so they would just ask those people to watch the laptop. in the case of being by yourself, which happened to me a few times, i took it with me along with all my books and everything. the reason: not a week went by without laptop theft or textbook theft from the library being reported in the campus police blotter. for those that think "well there are lots of people around, they will notice something" is complete bull. i'm sorry, but people that dont know you will not care to watch your stuff, that is just how it goes in life. people cant be bothered with stuff like that if it doesnt concern them directly.

Dell is coming out with Virtual Pee software that will eliminate the need for Dell laptop owners to ever get up to use the bathroom. You can even choose the color of your virtual stream- Cleanly Clear, Yosemite Yellow, or You Really Should Get a Doctor To Check That Out Green. Of course, the estimated ship date is in October, and you should expect to get an email the day before the ESD bumping the date to December, so be prepared to hold it in for a while.

It's just common sense, for Christ's sake. I've never griped about a thread before, but what is a thread (with a poll, on top of it???!!!) asking what to do with your notebook when you go pee-pee doing in the DELL forum? Put it in off topic or something. Or, better yet, ask your mommy if she hasn't taught you yet. Sheesh!

Lol. Don't EVER leave your laptop out at a school library. I went to a state school and laptops were stolen constantly... they also used to steal bookbags outside of the bookstore since we weren't allowed to take them in the store with us... Even though it might be a pain... take it with you. A few moments of annoying packing and unpacking are WAY better than your laptop being stolen!

Yeah I think the answer's rather obvious even without looking at the poll results... leaving a laptop out in public is just asking for trouble.

I only bring my notebook with me when I really need it (studying at the library or on trips). I'm usually around friends when I have to bring it so I'll ask them to watch it.

No matter what you think, the laptop is not 100% safe if you are not there. Even locks can be broken.

I personally just leave it sit there never had anything happen in 4 years of having laptops.

Think it depends where you are possibly. I live in Australia and went to TAFE in what was considered a bad area but I knew basically everyone doing IT at the place and no-one else ever ventured into the IT area so it was safe. Now going to ANU so its fairly big and still just leave it there because everyone in the library is studying and they arn;t sitting their pretending just so they can steal people stuff. You get up and move around & even if someone is trying to steal stuff they don't know where you went you could be back any second maybe you just went to grab a book or return something.

but anyways if you wanna deter anyone from stealing it try this program

    http://www.freedownloadaday.com/2007/07/29/laptop-alarm-its-like-a-car-alarm-for-your-computer/

Set it to go off as soon as power is unplugged. Walk away from your laptop as soon as it loses power It goes mental at full volume and in the middle of a library will get huge attention. If your not plugged into power try setting it to go off when the comp shuts down & set windows to shutdown when the screen closes.

He said he was going to school in Newark. I grew up a few towns away, you should definitely leave the laptop in the library. If you take it into the bathroom, you are just giving them a quiet place to mug you! LOL.

There was once a time when people were born with common sense (although we could also go with the nuture side of the debate and say there was a time when parents taught people common sense...)...

If you value something take measures to protect it... It is just that simple... Don't value it then don't take measures and don't fret when it is stolen.
