    Hi there,

I'm having a problem with a Dell C640 laptop. It's dead, and doesn't seem to be getting any power at all. The LED that comes on (on the notebook) when plugged into the AC adapter isn't coming on either.

The AC adapter's LED is supposed to remain a steady green at all times when plugged into an outlet. It has started flashing when plugged into the notebook. I've tested the output on the adapter with a multimeter and it reads normal.

I don't know whether this is a problem with the adapter or the notebook, and i don't want to jump the gun and say it's either, especially since i don't have spares for this particular laptop to test it with. Please help, any help will be appreciated

Remove battery from notebook plug mains lead into notebook and take it from there. You may have a battery failure.

Multimeter Testing isn't conclusive -- the power adapter may be unable to supply the voltage at a higher current demand. Yeah, try pulling the battery. The Power Adapter may also be signaling a Fault in the Circuit.

Hi there, the laptop does exactly the same after pulling the battery. Somebody else told me that the laptop needs a battery in it to fuction, and that the flashing green LED means it can't find a battery?

No, you can run on the main power without a battery (at least that is the case with most notebooks.). Don't know what the flashing LED means though.

so does that mean i need a new adapter or a connection jack on laptop, ive ripped the laptop apart (took like 2 hours) and nothing looks or smells fried on it. The jack itself looks ok
