I thought the CPU was broken so i ordered a new one and put that in. Whereas with the old CPU i had some semblance of boot with the new CPU when i start it all that happenes is that the volume up/down buttons light up and the mute button blink. Thats it. Nothing more. How do i fix this? Thanks.

It's very rare for CPUs to die. If you've tried running the machine with known good memory, a known good power supply, and a known good battery, you almost certainly have a bad motherboard. What model is this?

I have the dell studio 1536. The RAM has had problems (I believe it is just one stick) And the power cable is bad but the battery has charge so it should be able to boot. I could try to run it with just one stick of RAM and alternate them. However i am pretty sure it would boot but tell me memory reduced. And there is no way i can shell out $150 for a new mobo for something that has such a poor build quality. (Student. Will get a new lappy as soon as i get my financial aid check)

But what led up to this problem was
    A: freezing
B: It would go to a screen that looks like GPU fail and stay frozen there.

I put the CPU in again and that fixed it. Now what happens is that the CD drive spins up and it goes through part of the booting procedure as i can tell by the sounds but nothing shows on the screen and the external monitor shows nothing too. I have tried running it with one stick of RAM< and swapping the RAM sticks between the slots but it is the same thing. No hard drive is the same thing. I tried to swap out the CPU with a identical model. Still nothing. Can someone give me some hints
