Hi there I'm wondering if the laptops from the dell outlet range are good and worth the money? And if so then should I look at just buying the "certified refurbished" or "scratch and dent ones" or are both fine? If anyone has any good or bad experience with the dell outlet range then it would be much appreciated.

    Hi Missmayi,

I have ordered two systems from the outlet and both are still in use months later. I had a good experience with them so far. My Dell Mini 1012 is with my mother and she's using it trouble free since July and I ordered this 17R 2nd gen laptop in July when I had given her my little blue wonder. I know there are some people here who've ordered both Certified refurbs like I did but also got scratch & dent's without problems. You can check out a lot of people's thoughts on this subject in the thread I started earlier at the beginning of this year here:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/dell/545102-what-do-you-think-outlet-deals.html

I think this thread will have the feedback you're seeking Missmayi. Good luck! I know I totally LOVE my 17R and my mother LOVES her 1012. I will say that if you're looking for a netbook get it NOW because they've taken them OFF the main site, because they aren't going to make them anymore, not sure what they will put in it's place either, but just wanted to give you a heads up in case that was the kind of system you were looking for. Hope this helps. :D

Certified Refurbished and Scratch&dent both had little bits of scratches and dents for me.

The scratch & dents are usually cheaper, I suggest you jump on the scratch&dent if there are any.

My experience with DELL's outlet, is extremely good. I got an XPS17 for £480 that was "scratch and dent" and it looked brand new, apart from a tiny nick on the lid that was about 2mm is length.

the outlet site is an amazing place to grab a bargin.

Mine lasted for years..the one that broke was my own fault for spilling things on it. Last I bought was a desktop from the outlet about a year ago and it still works perfectly.

I also bought a Dell outlet one year ago. I'm pretty happy with it and I have no problems.

I've bought a ton of systems from the Dell Outlet and recommend it. I like getting my system faster rather than having to wait for the build process.

I bought a laptop that came without the backlit keyboard. Replacement 1 was missing the 1600x900 screen. Replacement 2 came with a bad LCD. Replacement 3 was missing the backlit keyboard. Final replacement was "Outlet New" and had SSD instead of HDD and I kept it :D

It took over a month from the original date of order and many emails and phone calls to Dell, in the end however, they made things alright. So if you're not in a big hurry and are willing to be persistent, you can get a great deal.

12 great latitudes and 5 great optiplexs from the outlet. Had 1 horrid latitude I had to return. Dell support all but accused me of theft. I returned it. Had 2 latitudes with some kind of faulty warranty (always purchase the 3 year NBD warranty). First I returned. The last one support told me I have to call Dell Outlet to activate warranty, if there is a warranty problem, it happens sometimes. Support went ahead and correct the warranty issue.

Love Dell hardware. Most of business support is good. Server support is AWESOME! Please have server support train the rest, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE ( they make home support look horrible). Not a fan of the included software. Hopefully the paid for software is worth it. One day we might actually purchase some Dell management software.

    This post is great.

I planning to get a Certified Refurb M4600 in coming days and hoping no problem.

I find it weird with Outlet pricing structure - sometimes I could find similar specs at a cheaper price for Outlet New, compare to Refurb.

Depends on what they have in stock, but tons of people camp Outlet all the time and coupon stack. But that's one cool thing about Outlet, you can sometimes find a hidden gem. :)

    Hi Miss Mayi

This is Francis M with the Dell Social Media and Community outreach.
I would like to add few more information on purchasing the Dell Outlet Products.

And its a Great Value !!
Dell Outlet offers great prices on some of the latest Dell products. We also offer three types of inventory to help you find just the deal you're looking for:

Certified Refurbished PCs are laptops and desktops that have been returned to Dell, put through the production process and then again retested to ensure they meet all original factory specifications. Certified refurbished systems may have some observable cosmetic blemishes, but they will not affect performance.

Dell Outlet New systems are PCs and enterprise products that were canceled orders, or systems that shipped out to a customer who decided to return the system without ever using it. Dell Outlet New systems do not have any cosmetic damages.

Scratch and Dent products are systems with considerable cosmetic blemishes that do not affect performance. They are a great way to save money while still enjoying Dell Outlet's rigorous rebuilding and testing process. Scratch and Dent computers will not have scratches or pits on the screen, missing or illegible letters on the keyboard, or damage on the touchpad or palmrest.
    Fast & Free Shipping
Dell Outlet now offers free 3–5 day shipping on all systems, refurbished monitors and refurbished printers! And we’re still fast: systems are built and ready to ship, so most Dell Outlet systems ship within 24 hours of order approval.
Same as New Warranty* and Support
Dell Outlet gives you the same limited hardware warranty* and service as if you bought new, plus we offer a 21-day return policy on all Dell Outlet products.
    Eco-friendly
Dell Outlet is committed to maximizing the reuse or recycling of all returned Dell products. We refurbish and sell over 90 percent of all returned Dell systems. The remaining 10 percent of returned Dell product is resold for parts or recyclable materials (metal, glass and plastic). We at Dell Outlet believe it's important to consider the environmental impact at every stage in the product life cycle.

Before you buy any Dell make sure you can replace hard drives without fully disassembling laptop, many inspiron models require you to remove mother board. Worst computer design ever!

I bought a Certified Refurbished Dell XPS 15z laptop from Dell Outlet with 30% off code. I don't want to tell the price, but it was cheap and I was happy at that time.
When I got it, opened the brown (not detail) box, I found the shiny plastic fringe (around the laptop) is broken. I had to use super glue to fix it. But I cannot hide the cracks.
I also found some deep scratches at ports (left) side. Looks like somebody tried to open bottom cover violently.
Fortunately, the machine is now working fine, but I don't feel happy at all. My laptop is even worse then "Scratch and Dent product" described above.
Yes, just FYI. You get what you pay for.

I ordered an Outlet XPS 15. It was supposed to have an i7 and 1080 screen. Booted it up and saw it was the normal 1366X768 screeen and an i5.

Called up support, they argued that their database showed it was shipped with right specs. Support connected up to my system and then had to take snapshots to show the supervisor. After 2 hours of calling and waiting for them to take snapshots, I was told the best thing would be to just return the laptop. Another hour on the phone with Dell Customer Support where the guy tried to offer me $50 to keep the system(They would have ripped off someone who didn't know better). Tried again with $80 and finally just sent me a label.

So my Outlet experience can be summarized in this. Wrong system+ 3hours on the phone to get it returned.

I don't know how prevalent that is, but whatever the answer is, you're wrong. Apple prevents you from replacing basically anything at all, even the RAM, in some of their models.

I bought a Dell Precision M6600 in the outlet. It was marked as "scratch and dent". I was afraid I'd get something all messed up but it was in actually very good condition. Just one half mm nick on the top cover. Overall I'm really happy.

Can't beat the price when combined with their frequent 20-30% coupons + cashback from various sites.

I'm assuming that the newer the laptop model you're ordering, the greater the likelihood of it coming in pretty good shape..

So is consumer access to parts the sole factor in determining if a computer is designed well or not?

But anyways, you can pretty easily upgrade basics like RAM and HDDs on most every Apple laptop, with the exception being the Air for obvious reasons.

I'll tell you my bad experience: bought a Dell L502x from the outlet. It was "certified refurbished", not scratch & dent. When I got it, it was dirty. Crumbs and fingerprints everywhere, looked like it had not been cleaned at all. The computer itself was a complete lemon, would turn on and then shut off before it could fully start up. Complete garbage.

However, my dad bought a Dell L501x from the Outlet and it was in great shape. It's a bit of gamble, but I think I did just get unlucky.
