It seems they top out at 500 gb. Although I saw there is a 640 gb drive called the Samsung Spinpoint MP4 that is supposed to be out, but I can't find anywhere to buy it yet.

There are other larger drives, but they are only 5400 rpm.

My 320 gb laptop internal drive which came with my Dell finally crashed completely, blue screen, and all tests regarding the drive say 'fail', so I guess it's time to buy a new one...it was 5400 and I should upgrade to 7200 anyway....

    Fortunately everything is backed up.

    Anything else out there ?

I think you've done your research well enough; I don't see 7200RPM drives bigger than 500GB readily available either. You may want to consider a larger 5400RPM drive, though; the performance difference won't be much.

Not 7200RPM but the largest capacity drive of normal laptop HDD size. 2.5" 9.5mm 750GB Western Digital 5400 RPM. Due to the increased density, performance won't be much differant than a 7200RPM drive. Doubtful it would be noticable

Really ? I am playing some very large piano libraries, where 7200 is "required" for best performance. The one issue I have with 7200rpm drives, is I have heard they can be loud. Which is a concern when recording from a microphone. So I guess if I could get away with a 5400rpm drive I would. Is it really true a 5400 rpm drive can perform as well as a 7200 ?

Here is a pretty good article on the 750GB drive. I have yet to see benchmarks run against a 7200RPM drive, but I'm not sure you would really notice much differance. Unfortunately in the article there are only synthetic benchmarks, and no real world bench's done.

    Thanks.

Have you seen one of these ?

    1TB Dell Inspiron 1420 1420n 1501 1520 Hard Drive NEW - eBay (item 390189071139 end time May-28-10 15:14:20 PDT)

    I sent them a message:

Hello, can you tell me what is the brand name of the manufacturer of this hard drive ? And also, do you guarantee this drive will fit in a Dell Inspiron 1520 ? Because I know there are some issues with different sizes of drives and the capacity in the laptops. -thanks

    Their response:

    hi

This is a Seagate, WD or Hitachi hard drive. Fully compatible with your laptop. Please still keep the mounting hardware of your old hard drive as the new hd may need it

    Thx

The Ebay one is also going to be a 12.5mm HDD as well. The largest size in 9.5mm is going to be the 750GB.

hmm. Well, the listing says 9.5, but I guess that may be an error on the part of the seller. (?)

Moste likely, there's no 1TB drive under 12.5mm. I'd have one if there were ;)

Well, I am tempted to get the WD 750gb, seems like a good deal at around $110, but the Samsung Spinpoint MP4 is 640gb and spins at 7200rpm with a 16mb cache. Less space but should be much better performance. They are supposed to be available in late May early June. I'm going to wait for it.
