Hey guys, its Dan. Sorry to keep coming with so many questions but I really appreciate all your guys help. My new problem is that I cannot figure out how to get my internet connection back. I reinstalled the driver cd that came with my Dell but still nothing. I had the same problem when I reinstalled the OS on my girlfriends computer. I still cannot figure out how to get her wifi working either.

I have a Dell 1720 by the way and wifi worked before the reinstall of my OS.

Also, does anyone know anything about the dell mediadirect? I went to install it on my computer and it said it was going to completely erase everything on my HD? ***? How can I get this on my computer or how do I create a new partition for this? Any help is appreciated.

Thank you so much again, I really do appreciate your guys help. And I'm on my ma's computer that's why I can access the internet if you're wondering.

You have to manually install the drivers from the CD.. Did you do that? Nevertheless, I recommend using the latest drivers from Dell's website instead of the ones from the CD. Make sure you grab the right "network" and "communication" drivers: http://support.dell.com/support/dow...D=INS_PNT_PM_1720&os=WLH&osl=en&catid=&impid=

You're probably missing the wireless driver. Putting the CD in the drive does not install the drivers. You need to do it manually by selecting each one. Again, I recommend the updated drivers on Dell's website.

I believe the only way to install mediadirect is to do it as part of a clean install of Vista.

^ I agree with everything Crash has said.

Also, I think its better you do a clean install (if you want to get in MediaDirect) and follow the Les' guide (Sticky in the Dell Forum)... That should get your systems and everything in your system working again.

As for wireless drivers, make sure you chose the right one from Dell, as Crash said.

Dell Media direct is exactly like windows media center (as opposed to Windows Media Player). If you liked media direct but do not want to start the reinstall again, I suggest taking media center for a spin, you should have it as part of your basic vista install.

isn't it true that you don't need to boot into windows for media-direct? (just press your regularly configured mediadirect button)
wheras wm player you would have to login to windows first?

i might be wrong, i just am quoting hearsay

I am not an expert (hated media direct personally) - but media direct DOES have its own partition and is in fact bootable. Despite this, the one time that I used it to boot my machine, it still loaded Vista in the background. When I exited media direct I was in a normal vista instance. In fact, part of the reason I am not bothering with it is because I realized that it is not in fact a "dell media OS" - it doesn't stand on its own. When I realized that media center was so similar I gave up on it entirely.

All the dell programs and quick starts had my RAM usage over a gig every boot anyway and that drove me crazy. Especially after a fresh install when I realized that a 'normal' install was sitting around 800Mb of RAM or so.
