I am looking for a laptop that's really light weight . 400m and D400 bith have 12" displays, and thats too small for me. So I am considering 600m and D610, which are 14" each.

Can someone give a comparison between Inspiron 600m and Latitude D610?

I dont want to get a separate unit for my DVD/ CD drive. While configuring 600m, the DVD/ CD are shown under "CD/ DVD Drives", while when I try to configure D610, they are shown under "Module Bay Devices".

Does this mean that the D610 does not have the DVD/ CD drive built into its chassis, and I have to get a separate unit like a Docking Station for the drive?

    Please advise, thanks.

I've been looking at the Latitude 610, too and was wondering about the quality and design of it. I had read that when you plug in headphones you get a hissing and was just wondering if everyone who has one has experienced that. Basically, if it's a worry-free laptop that would be good for a student or not.

Modular Bay just means that you can remove the drive without having to unscrew anything. It has a release latch that you push and you can pull the drive out and insert another one.

The D610 is better built for portability, and lasts longer. The 600m is cheaper, but it is not built as well as the D610.

The headphone problem still exists to my knowledge, but it should be fixed soon. Dell should be releasing a BIOS update soon.

I'm a latitude owner...Dell Latitude is a great machine...it is a very stable machine..but latitude build quality is very poor at all since my lappy got scratched everywhere easily and the paint is come off easily too...but now latitude has the tri metal chassis that makes the chassis sturdier...
    U can't go wrong with D610...believe me.. :750:

I have the dell D610 for work and I like the quality of it except for the integrated graphics on it. The machine, is fast, light, sturdy and has good battery life.

Does anybody know if the infamous D610 audio/headphone hiss problem is limited to configurations with the ATI x300 graphics card? Does this problem exist with the intel integrated graphics?

i don't have this problem on mine with the integrated graphics, and I can ask my friend who got his system for work with the ATI card for linux support to see if he has a problem.
