I've not touched this laptop in some time and decided to refurbish it for my mum. I pulled out the 6gb hard drive and replaced it with a 40gb, then installed xp and the drivers for sound, video and wifi. Everything is running sweet except the fan doesn't come on, like, at all. So I ran the dell diagnostic to check it's functioning properly and it spins up fine then, in fact it spins up fine when running the diagnostic, I ran the thermostat test and was alarmed to find that the maximum required temp to pass this test was 100 degC, and that the cpu was sitting at 70 give or take a couple of degrees. I realise that the fan shouldn't run all the time in xp as the os works differently to the older style os's but I tried getting it to trigger the fan and all I got was a damn hot laptop and a lot of read errors, no fan. Next port of call was to try a software controller, I tried fanGUI but sadly the only thing I can do with that program is monitor my hdd temp. The problem is, after prolonged use (about 30 mins) the laptop begins to get quite hot and tasks begin to slow down. Any suggestions on how I can force the fan to run non-stop in xp?

I've manged to fix the problem, but I thought I'd write it here for anyone else who has similar trouble. A bios update to the final A14 (I think) has allowed fanGUI to control the fan.
