I really wonder why nobody talks about the new D420. Come on, its light and a very decent package (at least when the dual core ulv processor will be available). Did anybody order or even get one?

And whats your opinion? I checked the SZ series which is of course a real beast but since I like silent notebooks these notebooks are no real option. (Yes, I know there is dedicated graphics, bulit-in optical drive and so on - I dont wanna discuss that you cant compare it). I love widescreen so X60 isnt an option either. Gateway NX100 isnt available for Europeans like me. So why NOT the D420?

Only thing I don't like about the 420 is the lack of core duo. This summer when the 420 will have the core duo then there will be nothing to not like (except the optical drive).

I like my D400 and will like D420 as well. Since I have already had D400, I would skip D420 and prefer an M1210 which is a perfect 12-inch notebook, all in one!

The D420 will have decent build being a latitude. The Core Duo version will be out this summer and will probably come out earlier in Europe (Everything seems to. =P). My understanding from abaxter's unveiling thread is that the Core Duo version will have a fan while to Core Solo version currently does not. The D420 also has a 1.8 inch HD which means a slower 4200rpm harddrive. I think the X60 has a 2.5 inch HD, but I'm not sure. The lack of an opitcal drive will only bother some people. For someone who want's light it's probably a worth while sacrafice. As it's obviously meant to lightin the laptop and increase battery life. DVDs could be ripped and watched from the HD.

The D420 isn't being talked about because those that ordered it on the first day it was available (me) haven't gotten it yet and still not sure when. As soon as I get it, I'll give thoughts and will be posting a review!

Also, the Core Duo version will be available end of summer, I'll probably end up reviewing both versions. Core Solo = no fans and better battery life, Core Duo = performance boost.

Well, I thought, technically there wont be a fan in the core duo version either. The most interesting question to me is: How long will the battery last with the core duo ulv cpu? Funny thing by the way: Here in Germany Dell even doesnt offer the 3-cell battery for some reason. One can only choose between 6- and 9-cell batteries. But they still advertise the D420 as 3lbs-notebook.

And if we only knew what "end of the summer" meant.

I like the D420 but I am waiting for the Core Duo model. abaxter explained in this thread that the Core Duo D420 will have a heat pipe. My interpretation is that this means no fan = no sound. That is important to me as I prefer a notebook that is as quiet as possible. The only thing I don't like is the 1.8" hard drive but that's a compromise I am willing to make for a small, silent notebook with long battery life. I am looking forward to the first reviews!

Yes the 1.8" drive would be a no go for me.
