My friend has a D610. The native resolution of 1400xwhtaever makes things too small for him.

When we try to put it in 1024x768, the viewable screen doesn't fill up the display.

In the BIOS, I have enabled the option for LCD Panel Expansion and saved the setting. This seems to work, momentarily. The BIOS then fills the screen, as does the Windows XP splash screen. The Welcome screen looks fine as does the desktop for a second, then the display readjusts itself to not filling. In the BIOS, the setting has reverted back to Off.

    Any ideas here?

    *edit*
Its using the 64MB X300 Graphics Card, Windows XP Pro.

I did the reverse on my D610. Originally smaller resolutions were expanded to fill the screen and I changed the BIOS so that they are not. That is how it remains.
I suppose all that tells you is that with some level of BIOS (that I had then) the machine could be stable with the setting that you desire.

Can you check if a BIOS update is available?

It has the newest available bios. I suppose I could downgrade it and see if one of the bios revisions does what I want 1 by 1.

It has version A06 of the BIOS. I downloaded versions A03 and A05 from Dell's site. Neither would work as far as "downgrading" to them. It tells me that no valid ROM image file could be found >.<. I've done this (downgrading the BIOS) before on other Dell Laptops without issue. Argh.

What if you leave the screen resolution the way it is and adjust the DPI and the icon sizes and spacings? LCD screens are not flexible in the resolution department like CRT screens are.

I'll see if he's ok with that when I see him.
