I've tried for over an hour and can't figure out why I can't connect to my home wireless network - my notebook (which I just got today) detects the verizon signal from the router and displays the SSID but whenever I try to connect to it, nothing happens! I've tried using the wireless network wizard, looked up trouble shooting tips online, and I really have no idea what to do now. Another issue is that every couple seconds I see the cursor change to the hourglass..some process must be running in the background but I don't know which it is and how to shut it off. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

For the hourglass problem, uninstall Google Desktop. I can't remember what the exact .exe file, but it runs in the background.

On the wireless issue, can you connect to the router by cable, and get the internet to work? Also do you have a firewall?

I just uninstalled google desktop and am currently installing norton antivirus so hopefully the hourglass will disappear after that.

I just connected the laptop to the router via ethernet cable and it's working fine. As for the firewall, I was using the windows default one but am right now making Norton Antivirus' the default.

yeah the hourglass issue is still there..I don't understand. I JUST got the laptop today, turned it on and tried to set up the wireless network and already it's frozen and has some program running in the background that I don't know (one of the reasons I got the latitude was so I wouldn't have to worry about extra dell software..)

try that. It turns out that it is Google Toolbar.

You said that you were getting signal from your router, and got the SSID. What happened after that? Did you acutally fully connect to the router, but couldn't get IE/FF to work?

On the router, do you have it set where you must enter a MAC address in your Router's settings in order to connect to it?

THANKS!! It indeed WAS the googletoolbar files...sneaky. When I view the wireless network wizard page where it displays available networks, I highlight the SSID of my router and I click on next, it tells me that a profile already exists for it and that I'll be replacing it..I click next and then it takes to a page where I can click on "connect" but once I press it, the screen goes away but nothing appears to have happened. My router is configured to have open access if that helps..I'm not sure what a MAC address is.

try reinstalling windows and all its drivers. The dell bloatware might be messing it up
