My week-old computer listed in the title of this post has already had 4 blue screens of death due to the nv4_disp error. I looked online to find out how to fix this, and the universal answer seems to be to update the drivers.

Unfortunately, when I delete the current driver and try to replace it with one that I get either from the dell support page or from NVIDIA itself, I get a message saying "The NVIDIA Setup program could not find any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit"

I don't know what this means. Are both Dell and Nvidia offering incorrect drivers for the 135M? Is there something I should know about? Can I get something at laptopvideo2go that will help with the BSOD problem?

One final issue: because I couldn't get any of the driver downloads from either location to work, I just reinstalled the factory preset driver, I think, and now sometimes the screen remains blank (but illuminated) when booted or won't come on when coming out of sleep mode. It seems to be more screwed up than before, but at least I haven't seen any BSOD errors.

    I'm using XP Home.

    Thanks!

These are the newest drivers, the Dell ones are WAY out of date. Fully remove the old drivers and use these new ones instead.

Thanks for the distinction. How do I figure out which driver to download? There certainly are a lot. Is there a better way than to go down the list from the largest number looking for an .inf for DEV_042B, which is supposedly the 135M card?

Just use ctrl + f on those big lists, I don't think there's a much better way...

I did a search on the laptopvideo2go forum and the only driver that came up for "135M" was ForceWare X101.43 for Windows Vista. The problem is that I am using XP Home, and no drivers for XP Home mention 135M. What to do? I can't use the Vista drivers, can I? Can I use drivers for another card?

I still haven't found any drivers for the 135M and XP. My computer has started freezing up now, so things are getting worse. Any help?

Hi Billtron. What version of the drivers are you using right now?

Elmo18, thanks for offering those drivers, but when I try to install them I get the same error message:

"The NVIDIA Setup program could not find any drivers that are compatible with your current hardware. Setup will now exit"

I got the following response on the dell support forum. I sure hope this isn't the only solution.

    :)

No problems Billtron. I used to troubleshoot computers back in my high school days...Now doing other things, so I haven't even thought joining computer forums, or what not.

But I just got a laptop (first one in awhile), so I thought I'd join here.

The D630 is an amazing machine. Once better drivers come out for the 135M for Vista and XP, things will be better.

The machine is very business-friendly, and professional looking. Now I am looking for a laptop for home..

    Elmo18,

Well, I've run across the first problem with the drivers I installed. When I try to boot up from sleep, the screen won't turn on. Everything else is on. I can hear the computer logging in as me, then I get pop-up messages from the XP toolbar telling me something, but because the screen isn't on, I don't know what the messages say.

I seem to remember seeing other people having similar problems with drivers for NVIDIA cards.

Have you tried using the above drivers? Also, have you tried doing reformatting and doing a fresh install of the OS?

I assume when you boot up from sleep (that is Sleep, not Hibernate, right?) you've tried pressing the power button once, and have tried Fn+F8, and Fn+ESC.

I am using 165.01 drivers currently, but I still get strange behavior like errors during startup and freezing whether I am running firefox, Word or a game like Civ 4.

The main difference between the most recent dell drivers (from mid-June) and these laptopvideo2go drivers is that the latter sometimes has BSOD messages caused by nv4_disp.

I haven't tried a fresh install of the OS. Before I try such a thing, would you mind explaining to me what that would accomplish.

I truly can't tell if this is a hardware or driver issue. I am about to send the computer back for a complete replacement with identical specs on Monday, but if that will just lead to the same issues that I am having now, I would rather return it for a refund. Am I the only one having these problems with my D630?

The medical facility where I work has multiple D630's in operation right now, and none of them display the problems you're experiencing. A reformat and reinstall is a catchall fix that should take care of any driver or software problems or compatibility issues. I recommended that because the variety of problems you're having, and the fact that these problems occurred on multiple video driver sets seems to indicate that another driver or piece of software is interfering with the video display drivers.

Well, I wiped the hard drive clean and reinstalled windows xp home fresh on an empty hard drive. Then I installed all drivers dell has for the computer, including their most recent video driver for the 135m. Four hours later, no errors, not even coming out of sleep or hibernation modes.

I've only installed AVG and firefox. Planning on installing Office and WoW later today. We will see what happens. What are the odds that the video card just isn't compatible with some games? Could it be that simply installing a game that is incompatible with the machine is causing it to freeze on bootup and while running software?

    Dumfounded, but making progress...

No, merely installing a game shouldn't cause those freeze-ups. If you do encounter game incompatibilities, then the best thing to do would be to use Geforce drivers from laptopvideo2go. However, if your current drivers seem to work fine, then it's probably best not messing with it.

Nobody seems to have mentioned this: http://www.guru3d.com/index.php?page=driversweeper

Use it to remove remnants of a previous driver before upgrading to a different one.

Anyway I'm running 158.22 right now and it works fine for my nvs 140m. I ran 165.01 (the version on lv2g, elmo seems to have posted a different d/l which i may try later) for awhile but it was annoying that standby/hibernate wouldn't work (display wouldn't come back on).

This is a tough one. So what is the problem with the driver I posted last Billtron? hmm

Now I am using the most recent dell drivers and have only had trouble returning from standby mode once. I am going to try 97.73 and see if that helps.

Update: Dell is sending a replacement machine. I was on the phone for several hours yesterday and today with tech support as they tried to figure out what was happening.

Computer Management > System Tools > Event Viewer > System showed a plethora of errors from the video side of things consisting primarily of the following two error codes:

000000ea = "THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER" - A device driver is spinning in an infinite loop, most likely waiting for hardware to become idle. This usually indicates problem with the hardware itself, or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly. In many cases this is the result of a bad video card or a bad display driver.

1000008e = "KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M" - Most of newsgroup comments about this error point to faulty hardware or drivers. The hardware varies from modems, video cards, USB device to memory or sound cards. Sometimes it proves to be hardware that it is not compatible with Windows XP.

Hopefully the new computer will work correctly. I would hate for this to be something that happens even when the hardware is performing as intended.

Will report upon receipt of replacement machine. Thanks for all the help so far!

I have been having this problem for about a month now. I have been completely confused by it, as the laptop is only about 2 months old.

For me, it crashes about 3/4 of the time I try to put it into sleep mode, whether that is by closing the lid or clicking shut-down and then sleep. It has no problem waking up from sleep or even hibernate, but going into it crashes it most of the time. (I have XP Pro too)

Thank you everyone for the indirect help, I will try updating my drivers when I get home and see if that fixes it.
