I have a Dell Latitude D800 I bought in Summer 2003, and it's held up very well aside from one problem. I have Windows configured to automatically download and install critical updates, some of which I guess require the system to reboot. When I have the screen in the closed position, my computer is set to just turn the screen off, not sleep/shutdown/etc. If the system downloads an update and reboots while the screen is down, when I come back later it's completely turned into a greyish white wide grid of distortion, and my machine becomes very hot. Also, the screen will be on when it reboots, even though its in the closed position.

Is this a known issue, and if so, is there any way to fix it? I'm worrying about this happening while I'm away for an extended period, and the computer overheating.

    details:
    Windows XP SP2
GeForce Go 4200 (latest drivers from Dell site)
    15.4 WUXGA

    Hi Nemt,
I'm having a very similar problem with my dell D800 (geForce4 4200 go) - all of a sudden, my screen is randomly just going out of wack (i get the matrix type screen) and i have to reboot - if i'm lucky, i'll get a half hour before it goes all crazy on me - i have also installed the newest dell drivers (which are quite old in my opinion), and still nothing is changing. please let me know if you were able to find something to fix the problem you are having - i have a feelin they are related. my collegue also has the exact same problem with his d800.

    Thanks,
