My D600 experiences periodic overheating problems and choppy performance while running graphically intensive programs. I can't be sure whether this is attributable to the processor or video card but I am fairly sure it is the Radeon 8500 mobility.

Would it be a good idea to replace the video card? I do not have much experience with laptop repairs and I was wondering if someone could point me to the right course of action regarding my problem.

You probably need to get a new computer with a newer video card. You can rarely replace a notebook GPU (Dell has a few exceptions in the XPS series I think).

Even then, you can only get that GPU if it was offered with the D600 and I'm fairly certain that would require a motherboard replacement.

    1. are you monitoring the temps? if so, what are the temps?

    2. what GPU (can you verify)?

    3. what graphically intensive programs are you talking about?

you can't expect the GPU to do more than is physically possible

the 8500 is a very dated card, if your trying to run modern games, or 3d apps you'll be lucky get accaptable performance at the lowest settings, your only option would be a modern machine with a capeable graphics card, bare minimum ati x1400/gf 7400, the sweet spot is the ati x1600/gf7600, but neither are available on dell machines
