It's interesting that Dell made a change to the D531 Lattitude that I think would have appealed to a lot of Lattitude purchasers. The questions is, why didn't they provide these options on the D631 and D831.

The changes are ... Truelife screen option.

I'm also curious why they went with the AMD processor over the Intel Santa Rosa chipset? Rather than cheapen the line up with a mediocre processor, why not provide a consistent processor selection throughout the Lattitude line. Pretty dumb marketing in my opinion. What do you think?

Latitude D531 with AMD X2 processor is more of a budget conscious upgrade than a performance upgrade. With Celerons and Pentium Ms out of the picture next best budget chip is AMD X2. Since X2 is a better processor than the Core Solo (dual core and 64bit), so why not provide that option? Therefore I don't think its a dumb move.

I have a feeling that DELL will release a Latitude D5xx maybe something like D530 with an Intel chip pretty soon.

I don't have any inside info, but this is what I see as the purpose of Dell's AMD option (Latitude D531 and Inspiron 1501):

    - Provide leverage in price negotiations with Intel. (If the price difference gets to be too much, more customers might choose the AMD option.)
    - Offer a budget dual-core option
    - Provide a way for Dell to test new features (such as Truelife screens) on a small scale before rolling them out across the whole Latitude line
    - In case AMD suddenly starts offering something much better in some way than what Intel has, they'll be ready to start selling it quickly.
