I have about a half an inch of leakage on the bottom of tmy 1210. Is that enough to request a replacement? Is this normal?
Im just not sure if its worth sending it back in.

Most LCD do have some sort of light leakage. It isn't really a question of how much or is it enough for Dell to take back. If you are unhappy with your screen for any reason, you can get a replacement.
Normally with light leakage, you'll notice it more on boot up versus any other time. If it does not bother you while you are watching a DVD or have a dark screen, then I wouldn't worry about it. If it does bother you in everyday normal tasks, then call dell for a replacement. They should be able to send a tech w/ the screen to you and replace it with no trouble at all.
The only problem with replacing it is that you might get a screen that has more light leakage than what you currently have, so you do have to take that chance when replacing your screen. -
My screen had a bit of leakage when I first got it, but after a couple of months it's almost completely gone. I wouldn't worry about it too much, it should go after a little while.
-
I wouldn't worry about it too much jTom. Light Leakage doesn't seem to last very long.
-
nope 1/2 inch is normal -
You're saying leakage goes away over time?
-
I can't guarantee that it will, but I know many people have said that it has on their systems.
-
I've seen users get use to it though, but I've never seen it go away.
-
people probably get used to the leakage
-
as said by SG, lol
-
Right, it defintely is still there -- you just adjust to it. In fact, many people wouldn't notice it to begin with, except it is so hyped here (and on other forums).

I know that you can exchange the screen several times during your 21 day period, but I don't know if you can after that. I don't think light leakage is covered under your warranty, and if you are getting it exchange in the 21 day period, it is more likely that Dell wants you to be completely happy with your laptop vs. returning it & getting a refund.

Yes I agree, I had a tech replace the LCD due to ripples in the screen, 2nd one had dead pixels and the tech scratched up the back of my LCD cover, so Dell sent out a new back cover and LCD (which is perfect, expect for the not so good blacks [as compared to the old 700m] and washout of black screen when tilted, this seems like it's apparent on all M1210 as seen on another forum). Back cover is even stiffer than the original one, so no more ripples when pressed from behind.

It depends on the problems & your warranty. If you have the at home/office warranty and are unhappy cause of light leakage, you can chat with a Dell Tech. Explain to them that you are unhappy with your display because it has so much light leakage, and if everything goes right, Dell will send a new display to a 3rd party tech who will install this for you.
Dead Pixels - i believe you have to have 6 dead pixels before dell will replace it (this can be replaced under warranty AFIAK)
Just a couple of notes - genearlly you can not request a certain manufacturer for the screen. They choose the display and send it to the tech. You can not upgrade/downgrade to another screen (i.e. go from glossy to matte, or vice versa). As I stated before, you have to be willing to take the chance that the replacement display is not going to be as good as your current display.
Before anyone asks, no this is not illegal to do this nor voids your warranty. If you are in the 21 day window, you can return your laptop if you are NOT completely 100% satisified with your laptop, so Dell will make changes to your laptop so that you are happy. Replacing the LCD screens falls into this category. Outside of the 21 day window, you'll have to call dell and see if they will replace under warranty or not. I honestly don't know if light leakage is covered under warranty.
What happened with NYC was covered under warranty because the warranty does cover damage caused by the Tech, but you must report it immediately. -

There is one spot near the edge on my M90 which produces mild ripples even when I touch the adjacent plastic encasing the screen. By touch I mean touch, no pressure.
The backlight there is almost blue, in contrast to white light leakage. Wondering if I shuld call Dell up.
When the tech replaces screen - do they scratch up the case/panel ? I cannot see how they would open up the screen encasing. -
They shouldn't scratch up the panel or casing. It is actually really easy to install new display - you have to be more careful about scratching up the screen versus scratching up the casing.
They'll take the top part of your laptop off. Remove the bezel and a ton of screws. Disconnect and take out the old display. Connect the new display and put it in the slot. Then replace all of the screws on the side as well as the bezel. Then it goes back on the hinges and antennas are connected to the bottom of the wifi card.
That is how it is done in a nutshell. They only replace the actual LCD. You'll still have the same bezel and back part (or top depending on how you look at it) of the display - the part with the dell logo.
